WTB '26 or '27 touring or runabout

Post by Tom Hicks » Tue Apr 09, 2019 12:30 pm

WTB a '26 -'27 with wire wheels, solid body, OK paint and interior, everything working, along with excellent mechanicals including recently rebuilt and balanced engine and transmission with a Scat Stroker crank, stipe 280 cam, high compression head, new babbit and pistons, etc. plus a Ruckstell in excellent condition. The tubes, tires, and wire wheels have to be in excellent condition. I want a driver, a car someone spent a lot of money to fix up right a couple of years ago that they have taken excellent care of, and now want to take a big loss on in order to sell. I will need to see the receipts on the engine, transmission, and Ruckstell build. Location matters as I have to consider shipping expenses although they could be included in the final price if the seller wanted.

I am told I should be able to find one for $10,000. Please contact me if you have the car I described for sale.

10 grand would be an awesome deal on such a car. It will cost that much to build the drivetrain you described. Then you have only a chassis. Another 10 to 12K would restore the rest of the car.

Tom,
If you find one like that, see if the guy has a second cause I would most definitely buy it!

I'll be on the lookout for you! I have been assured by an authority on the forum that they exist! I suspect I will have to up my offering price eventually, but I was also told I need to be patient, so I will wait awhile before I do.

How much do you think a vehicle like that will cost me?

That is an amazing car and an amazing price! You couldn't begin to build one for close to that, and it is meant to drive not park in a museum. It is the basic car I am looking for, except I want a Ruckstell and I am a little leery of a Rajo. I am not really familiar with the overhead valve conversions, I feel there are a lot of moving parts, and getting it repaired would be expensive.

I have thought about getting it, swapping the Rajo for Prus, selling the Rajo, putting in a Ruckstell, but I still wouldn't have the Scat Stroker Crank I want. I am not familiar with the crank in it, probably excellent to handle the Rajo, but I like the larger journals on the Stroker.

Again, an amazing car at an amazing price, just not what I am looking for. I am sure it will find an excellent home quickly, I am surprised it is still listed.

Thanks for recommending it.

Yes, that is about the way I figure it. But, I have been told, that if I am patient I will find one with little use for 10,000. I just have to be patient.

Tom,
I know that car and know the owner, I looked at the car and photographed it two weeks ago. The car is outstanding and the workmanship (done by Gary) is second to none. Add side curtains and it would make an excellent tour car. At 12K it is a steal.

I am being patient here.

Please see the specifications in my original post. Not all T's are the same, I am looking for a specific vehicle with specific mechanical modifications and excellent shape.

I am told by a reliable poster here that if I am patient someone who has built a vehicle like this will sell it to me for $10,000.

If you have the vehicle I am seeking, please contact me, I pay cash.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom. Don't believe every thing You hear. You have very specific wants which will be difficult to find all in one car. Add 5 to 8 K to Your 10K and You will be in the ball park ? You will most likely need to build the car to get all the things You want. I think the car You were looking for sold on April 1st.

Good Luck

You are mistaken. I am a motivated buyer with cash.

I had a thread about the cost of rebuilding a T engine the way I wanted and a respected poster on this forum suggested that I would be ahead by buying one that someone else had fixed up like I want and used a little. He told me to be patient.

I have other T's to drive while waiting, I am patient, and I think the right car will come along. Bob knows T's and T owners, he deals with a lot of cars, and he has an excellent reputation. I trust him to look over a car and depict it accurately. If he has the car I want for the right price, he has a sale, it is that easy.

I have been pretty specific in what I am looking for, a reputable poster says I will find one for $10,000 and Bob seems to think he has the car. Why are you involved?

If you are indeed actually serious; Whoever told you that you might ever find a car to those specifications, for that price, was seriously mistaken... Enough said.

Now, I have some emails in my inbox about a foreign lottery I’ve won that I have to attend to. My odds are better than yours...

Perhaps. I see you are an engine builder and own quite a few T's yourself, so I am going to assume you do know a lot about T's. What kind of price range should I be looking at?

I would imagine that if you shopped around experienced builders, a complete powerplant built to your specs, properly balanced, blueprinted, documented, nicely painted, completely assembled with starter, gen, carb, manifolds, and a guarantee would average around $10k.

Assuming that by "complete powerplant" you also mean a rebuilt transmission and clutch, I agree.

Bob has a nice touring for sale, but the mechanicals do not meet my specs.

Somewhere out there is someone who built a T right and now their situation has changed. They don't want to deal with people who promise to buy, but have to wait for a tax refund, or to sell something, or want to trade. They have the T I will drive hard in their garage taking up space because something in their life has changed. They don't want BS, they want a cash sale.

Please see my first post for my specs, I am ready to buy, and if a car meets my specs I will pay $11,000 cash. I hate to go up like that, but I need a motivated seller. Fall is coming, you built a great car, but it is time to move on. No BS from me, no BS from you, let's make a deal!

Tom. A move in the right direction. However with Your rigid specifications and demand for receipts I don't think You will find Your car at any price unless You are willing to compromise on what You want in a Model T.
Many of the engine mods and work You want are normally only seen on Speedsters such as the two You already own not on roadsters and tourings.
This is not Your first rodeo You own four ts and have been at this a long time. Your best bet is My opinion is E-Bay & Craigs list If the car You wanted showed here on the MTFCA site it would most likely be snapped by folks on this forum who know a bargain when they see one and be gone before You knew about it.

I agree good deals are out there. A 1921 Roadster in fair condition looked like it wouldn't take much to get it back on the road sold on CL locally last Month for $2950. and was snapped up in hours after the listing the same day. Good Luck

Tom, The exact car you want was just advertised here (‘26 Touring, Stynoski winner) for about $22k and about half his investment. I have a suspicion it won’t be for sale very long.

That is a really nice car, but not what I am looking for.

First, I feel that since it won a Stynoski, it is top of the line and should be kept in first class shape. I want a driver and I would feel like I was abusing a nice car like that. When I pull into a gas station and someone with children shows an interest I offer to let their children get in for pictures. I would never do that if I had a really nice car like this one. Yes, it is a beautiful car for a steal of a price, but not a car I would feel comfortable driving on a regular basis.

Second, the drivetrain does not meet my specs. I want a SCAT crank, not an old crank. I don't like breaking a crank. The rest of the engine is built from there for power.

That car is a GREAT deal, but not for me. I am very specific about what I want.

My father, Lee Chase, and I have a very nice 1924 Touring for sale in Los Angeles.

1927 engine and drive train.

Tour ready and a strong runner.

Stipe cam, Reeder flathead, late model crankshaft replaced and re-babbitted this month all by Rumble Seat Garage, Auburn, CA.
See the "How We Replace a Crankshaft at Rumble Seat Garage" thread on this General Forum. (first posted: Sat Jul 06, 2019 3:17 am)

Ruckstell rear-end with left side shifter.

Large drum original AC Brakes come with the car.

Paint, top, upholstery all in good condition.

Authentic 1924 California license plates.

This was built as (and is) the perfect car for someone who wants to tour.

My most recent enclosed carrier offer from LA to my house :

"GREAT NEWS! YOU'VE RECEIVED A NEW $2,168.00 QUOTE FROM Montway"

That quote is from USHIP so I have to add $100 to pay USHIP.

I have five other offers below $2,400. Shippers love to start in LA and go across country with a vehicle that is loaded first and unloaded last. Bids continue to come in, and they keep going down.

Plus, the vehicle does not have to come from California, if it comes from next door I would still pay $12,500 and I would pick it up, it just has to meet my specs.

Gold Mine

Post by Novice » Tue Jul 23, 2019 10:11 pm

Tom. That news We can all use. Sounds like You hit the shipping gold mine. What are the names of the other shippers. CA has a lot of Model Ts for sale and the prices You found make it feasible for Model T. buyers on the East Coast to consider a CA car. Now that You found lots of reasonable shipping. The only thing left is finding the Dream Car You want at the price You want to pay.
GOOD LUCK

Re: WTB '26 or '27 touring or runabout

Post by Tom Hicks » Wed Jul 24, 2019 12:43 am

I bought the TT I made into Ellie Mae from California. She came as a rolling chassis with engine/transmission/Warford/Ruckstell and is about 16' long, plus the cab was separate on a 4X4 pallet, and all the extra stuff was on a 6' X 6' pallet, so that is a lot of trailer space. The TT was $2,500 and the shipping was $2,800, or vice versa, I don't remember which was which. But that was USHIP, it arrived in a moving van which had two layers of cars, mine was the last to be unloaded. So half, or a little more of Ellie Mae's cost was shipping, but worth it. The cab (straightened and painted) and bed (Ford script) plus correct sides with hardware have a lot of value and I did not use them in building Ellie Mae. I will probably sell them at some point in the future. Point is, USHIP will get shippers to compete to give you a fair price.

Now, someone built a great '26 - '27 touring, with a SCAT crank, and their situation has changed. I am a buyer!

Fall is almost here and lots of cars will be going up for sale! Do you really want to store that Touring over the winter? Wouldn't your wife appreciate the garage space? Time for a quick sale before all the others hit the market.

Please let me know if you have a car for sale that meets my specs as laid out in this thread...

Fall is almost here. Are you really going to give my new Touring garage space over the winter. Check my specs, I know the car is out there, you just have to make the decision so send it to a good home where it will be driven regularly. I know you spent a lot fixing it up, but situations change, and you need to sell it.

I have been very patient. But there are other cars tempting me. I used to own one of these, 327, 4 on the floor, convertible, it was even red.

https://www.streetsideclassics.com/vehi ... onvertible

So it is best that whoever owns my future T go ahead and sell it to me. If my wife finds out I am sitting on that cash waiting for a T she will invariably find something else WE need to buy.

And your wife will appreciate the garage space!

Yes, I will still go that high. I should drop my offer due to fall coming and lots of people getting ready to unload their cars, but I am a generous guy.

I figure I should have my new car by next spring, I have been assured by a member of this forum who has been around the block and really knows T's that they are available. The plan is to find someone who has spent a lot more than I am offering to fix a car up first class mechanically, but then has lost interest, or had their situation change. I have been assured that car is out there, I just have to be patient.

And I am patient...

I might have found my car! Thanks Novice!

But I have not made a final decision, it does not completely meet my specs.

If you have a car that meets my specs let me know soon. Yours might be better for me. I am only buying one and I can't buy yours if I don't know it is available.

You are dreaming if you think you can get a T fixed up as you describe for $10,000 or asking to be scammed. JMHO

Tom,

I heard that there is an elderly member who is selling his 1912 Touring that just won 'Best In Class' at Pebble Beach (99 pts). It has a freshly rebuilt engine done in Detroit by Ford Motor Company complete with Scat Stoker crank, dynoed at 25 hp. Original cast iron Rocky Mountain Breaks and a brand new NOS Ruckstell rear end. Leather upholstery. Rear mounted vintage LOUIS VUITTON trunk. It comes with a 10 year bumper-to-bumper warrantee that includes monthly brass polishing ...and a 2020 model year Ford F250 4WD, an Exxon/ Mobile gas card, and new enclosed climate controlled trailer. He wants $10,000.00 firm for all three but he will include shipping anywhere in North America.

Any interest?

Well now to be fair, I HAVE raised my offer to $12,500 to include shipping. I probably should lower that some now that fall is here.

And, I was told by a very well respected poster on this Forum that I could find the car I want for that price, I just have to be patient. I am patient.

And why would anyone want to scam little old me?

Thanks for the invite, very kind of you, but I don't plan for this vehicle to cross the country again. If you are a serious Tourer there is a good chance you have seen this car over the last 15 years. The seller is well known in the antique car world and this is the car he used for touring. Being based in Arizona I suspect much of his touring was on the West Coast.

This car is much nicer cosmetically than I would typically own, but I will use it for regular driving and try to keep it up cosmetically as well as mechanically.

I figure I should have it here in a couple of weeks, there will be lots of pictures...
