Is it subject to 25% tariff ?

News report I saw today said “New or used Automobiles.”
So I would think yes.

Not necessarily all , or any $$ amount, of the car’s current value will be taxed importing items. It says that the body was restored by “The Craftsman”, in California, and I bet that many of the other parts used in restoration came from USA suppliers. If there are records of the car being once owned, and thus imported into the USA, it can return to the USA. Even if there are no such records then only the value of the Canadian parts are the taxable ones. Just like the new Ford F150’s assembled in Canada will get the tax on the non-USA percent of the total truck’s parts.

Is the asking price US or Canadian dollars? Big difference these days, and may change in short term future months.

They built rhdrive cars in Canada for the countries that drive on the left side of the road . The cars made for Canada all had the wheel on the left and both front doors opened

Canadian model t's were right hand drive on the east and west coast into the teens.

What you speak of, an item made in the USA, taken to Canada and now returning, has exemptions on it relating to taxes. Those have been in place for years. The President’s tariff is for “all imports”. The definition they use for import is “Any item brought into the country from another without regard to its original place of manufacture”. So, yes, it’s subject to a 25% tariff fee. The tariffs are even “stackable”. I was reading a few days ago about a situation where an auto part was caught in this mess. Raw materials to make a part were from the US, sent to a factory in Canada across from Detroit for forging, sent across to Detroit and plated, then sent back across to Canada for final machining and then delivered to the auto plant in the US. These parts would pay the tariff to Canada (Canadas tariff in response to the US tariff) when the materials were crossing over to Canada, when crossing to Detroit they would pay a tariff to the US. The tariff would be paid again to Canada when crossing back in to Canada for final machining and then another tariff would be paid when crossing back in to the US for assembly in the car. So four 25% tariffs would be paid on this part meaning it’s price doubles before it gets to the final assembly in the car. You might say “the simple answer is to make the part in the US and that solves it”. It may not be that simple. Contracts are in place with companies to make the part, with shipping companies to transport it, with the unions regarding the workers needed to make the parts, etc, etc. Also you have the cost of setting up to manufacture the part. The press used to make the part may be 50 years old, is depreciated and the company making it can do it at a very reasonable cost. To make it in the US you have to spend $15,000,000 on a new press, $5,000,000 on the facility to put it in, $$? for a new contract to hire employees, etc, etc. also this takes considerable time. Plus the model years change so this may be a part that is only in mass production for another 2 years making in impossible to justify the expense. I know we’ve all heard “the tariffs are paid by the country, not the consumer”. Well, I’ve got some ocean front property in Arizona I can give you a great deal on.

The price doubles ONLY if all four tariffs are charged on the original value of the part. If the second tariff is based on the original value plus the first tariff, by the time the fourth tariff is paid the cost will be nearly 2-1/2 times the original value (1.25 to the 4th power = 2.44), and that doesn’t include any real value added…

This post was about this piticular 1915 Model T now in Canada , and the new import tax on the restoration work done on it , or its parts, in the USA , if the now complete car enters the USA.

I can tell some of you don’t want to hear how the tariffs are implemented, and that’s exactly what was asked. Find an attorney that’s very familiar with international trade and understands the wording and implementation of this tariff. That’s what I did……. I learned a few things spending 35 years in a courthouse.

Kmatt2 - the tariff doesn’t apply to the “work done” it applies to the entire value of the car.

I sure hope he’s able to sell it. Looks like a great car. Everyone, including him needs to understand what the price should be. If he says it’s yours for $18,000 and a month later you get a bill from the Feds saying you owe $4500 I’m sure you’ll just be thrilled to pay it. I’ve never sold something on a site like this unless I absolutely knew what I was selling it for. Likewise I won’t buy something unless I know what I’m purchasing it for. I guess you operate differently.

If you want a car, buy it now. How long will you be dead?
