Smudge Pots

They were commonly called smudge pots and widely used by highway Maintenance crews till battery operated flashers came along in the late sixties ? which slowly replaced them.put out a little light and a lot of smoke.

Seeing smudge pots on road projects always brought this cartoon series to mind when I was a kid.

Can't say I ever tried to light one with a match but I have updated the lighting system in them before.
