WANTED: Rear Roller Bearings and Sleeves

Post by Dan B » Sat May 02, 2020 10:33 pm

I am looking for a pair of original rear axle outer Hyatt roller bearings in good condition. Bearings should be within normal tolerances, tight and free of pitting. I am willing to pay up for low wear, or NOS bearings.

I am also looking for a left and right pair of original FORD bearing sleeves.

Please contact me via email at the address below.

Thank you!

I have a shelf full of them, If you are not to far into PA you are welcome to come and take your pick of the bearings, there is some housing here also if you want some inner sleeves that have less wear than the outers. Joe Bell Tiffin Ohio

Lang's is carrying exact duplicates of the original sleeves. At least they were a few years ago. Steve Coniff did that for the hobby.

Thanks for the offer, Joe. Looks like I’m about 7 hours away. We live in big states.

I would still be interested if you’re able to find some good ones in your collection and willing to ship.

Larry, I found this post from 2009 stating as much but wondered if the information was still correct.

Thanks. I also have a box of bearings that are in OK shape, but none that I would consider using for a fresh rebuild.

To be clear, I’m looking for a set of known good bearings that someone set aside for a project or saved because they they are in great condition and meet all the criteria stated above.

Dan

good to hold out for really good bearings. You might offer to let someone send you a box of their "best" in a flat rate box and then return ship what you reject. Really good bearings are getting scarce as you're finding out. I accept them if .002" under or better, and use the Best Quality sleeves that Lang's sells. That is a really good product and you might be very surprised at just how snug those slightly worn bearings fit with those good sleeves.

Thanks Scott. Great idea and I would be willing to do that if anyone is interested. Ship me an assortment in a flat rate box and I’ll will pay you for the ones I keep plus return ship them. Email address in original post above.

I have some stock Ford rears that I scavenged for inner bearings. I hate doing that but I’m trying to get the best 3 for my Ruckstell. I think I have a couple that will do. Finding one that meets all the criteria is hard.

Will be posting over on the forum about a condition that I found several in that doesn’t seem to get addressed much. Depending on the responses I will be able to pass judgement on a couple more bearings.

Do tell about your loose cage "fix, Scott ! I've been repairing Model T's for over 30 years and have never found a suitable repair for the loose cage syndrome. Possible to wire weld but not in any of my T's.

Tighten up a loose cage, install the bearing on an outer so it can be checked. Run it for a season. Pull it out to check it. You can pretty much guarantee it will be loose again.

The only real fix I could possibly see would be to disassemble the roller bearing assembly. Re-machine the cage ends, make custom standoffs with oversize ends, and re-rivet them in a press on a fixture. Doesn’t sound worthwhile. Oh, also you would have to keep all the rollers in the same order and orientation.

Adam

which is precisely why I do not and will not state how to do it correctly and permanently on this forum. Every Legend in the hobby would jump in to tell me I'm wrong (just watch what is going to follow this post, and feel free to jump on the bandwagon as the ringleader if you wish). Just because someone cannot do or has not tried to do something successfully, does not mean that thing cannot be done successfully.

For the rest: honestly now, please, don't anyone send me an email asking. That offer just ended. I will continue in my shop to defy the experts...just don't expect any lessons.

That is unfortunate you feel that way Scott. Isn't one of the main reasons for this "hobby" for comradery, sharing & learning ?

Steve

I agree. And I've shared plenty, over the years. However in this one instance, I've posted once before how to do it and was immediately told by experts "that'll never work". At that time, I'd been doing it successfully for quite awhile and they've been fine for years and now I periodically do it to save otherwise excellent bearings. That is precisely why I intended to only work privately and still, one of the recognized experts essentially said "it won't work", not knowing the methodology involved. Brilliant! I guess that's what they call a "trade secret" now, and no one suffers from lack of knowledge, because, hey, you can't do it anyway. This forum is wonderful for learning old and new methods and sharing successes and failures, and then there are times this forum simply isn't worth the agravation.
