WTB Running Board Step Plate

Post by SurveyKing » Sun Jul 12, 2020 8:50 am

I would like to find a decent accessory step plate for my 25 roadster pick up. Just need one but would like original accessory item if possible. I hate to drill holes to mount it but have concluded it is the only way to keep big feet where they shouldn't be on a nice new paint job!

Daniel are you looking for the aluminum ones with the Ford logo casted into them?

Hank, I would prefer to find an original rather than a reproduction. If the original has Ford on it all the better.

Daniel,
We have so many adhesives available now, we often don't need to drill holes. Research which adhesive would apply for your task. If you glue to a painted surface, the substrate must be secure by proper process. Auto body steel panels are being glued on in the repair process and hold structural integrity. I hope this helps. If anyone can share new info, please do.

Daniel,
Another no drill choice.
I have a toolbox that attaches using the clamps off a rusty old expanding luggage rack.
Maybe a clamp on step?

Thoughts on gluing or clamping; If you glued it on, run the beads parallel to the running board so water or moisture can flow out. Once glued on would be more or less permanent so no taking if off if breaks or change your mind later without some work.
Clamps, depending on how thick/wide they are, most of the step plate would be unsupported so would flex every time it was stepped on which could lead to cracking or bowing. Most step plates I have seen are aluminum and not all that thick and were made to be mounted using the running boards as support under them.
If I were to suggest clamping, I would use a piece of plate that covered the most of or the whole area under the plate.
Just clamping it on, there is still going to be movement that will wear the paint and tops of the running board embossing every time it is stepped on or the running board flexes, which is what you are trying to avoid. You could attach a piece of thin rubber type material to the bottom of the plate. Using the clamps would allow you to remove and clean under it every so often.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Would magnets work, glue them onto the step plates. Use a piece of felt to protect the surface of the running board between the contact area.

Hi David.

It is not brass plated. I do not believe has ever been on a car - no wear on the upper surface. I purchased a fellow's collection and it was among the items. Brass takes well to plating so i imagine you want it Nickle plated. No matter, here is the photo of the reverse side.

Thanks,

Bruce

Thank you for posting photos of the luggage brackets used to hold the toolbox to the running board.
I am going to use your idea along with a thick piece of rubber between running board and toolbox to keep the toolbox from moving with the movement of the car.

I previously used a thick piece of rubber between running board and step plate and it makes it more stable when I step on it to get in and out of the car.
