Found one-Firestone clincher rim 30 x3 1/2

Post by Jack Putnam, in Ohio » Thu Sep 17, 2020 10:12 pm

WTB I am looking for a Firestone rim, 30 x 3 1/2. This rim has no lugs but is driven by a nipple that fits into a cup on the fellow of the wheel. The rim is held to the wheel by clamps with an encased nut. Near the hole for the valve stem they are marked "Firestone Metal Products". Let me know what is available. Jack, I have two in my swap meet stocks. Both have been sandblasted and electro zinc plated as was the usual finish. I bought them to re-sell for use on model T wooden felloe wheels. Both have excellent, thick beads and are heavy weights compared to T rims. One one, the register marks for the lugs are more pronounced where the lugs had been a little loose at some time. If you can't track something down locally, let me know and I will get a postage quote to send one to the USA.

I believe the collar around the valve hole is there just to stop the rim spinning on the felloe if the lugs get a bit loose. it is not a drive collar. The job of the lugs is to wedge the rim on to the taper of the wheel felloe. The jammed taper becomes the "drive" collar. This is the same situation with the Kelsey loose lug wheels. They have a bridging lug over one of the wheel bolts to stop the rim slipping around the felloe. This lug and the bolt over which it sits, are often worn , and I can understand why it is seen as a "Drive Lug". However, if the lug bolts are kept tight, that bridging lug never touches the bolt.

Hope this helps.

Jack. I had another look at the collar around the valve stem hole in your photo and it dawned on me that the rim you showed has a rolled in groove in the base of the rim. The two I have do not have this feature, being perfectly flat like a wooden felloe T rim. They were held in place with 5 lugs like the Firestone demountables for T accessory wheels, but these must have been for different lugs/felloes. Sorry to build up your hopes.

I bought them originally for anyone needing good rims for wooden felloe wheels. Just need to grind off the collar around the valve stem hole. I have not done this in case they are of value to someone who might need them as they are.
