I found a junk one with a cracked top at a swap meet. I then removed the remaining baklite parts by breaking it out and drilling holes in the bottom. Then by heating the shell enough with a torch to melt the tar inside but not the solder holding the top ring, I was able to let the tar and remaing coil windings and tar fall into a bucket for disposal and then final cleanup of the shell. Then using a die grinder with a rotary file or small grinding rock I slowly enlarged the top and bottom ring till a modern coil would slide inside the old Bosch shell with a snug fit. The bottom ring did not need the coil to slide thru for my coil, but I did open it enough for cooling and let any water that may get in there to drain out. After painting and mounting the shell on the firewall, just slide the coil in place. I did not attach the modern coil in any way, just a sliding fit was solid enough. A person could use a modern 6 volt or 12 volt coil depending on their needs. Other than black backlite instead of brown backlite like on the Bosch coil It is almost impossible to tell from an original.
I have seen originals on e-bay but they a fairly pricy for nice clean coils, but old rusty ones are cheaper, or maybe you can find a broken one like I did. I am not at home at this time so I can not post pictures of my coil.
