WTB - Four (4) Gas Shut Off Valves with Round Handles

Post by CudaMan » Sun Nov 29, 2020 9:06 am

Hello, I'm looking for four of these, Lang's is currently out of them and I haven't been able to find them on other supplier's websites.

Actually, what I really need are the rounded handles, they match the style of handle on the drip cups that should be on my Flanders 20. My current drip cups have a flattened handle that doesn't look correct.

Have you checked hardware stores or plumbing supply houses?

Not yet, but I did find one valve on Ebay that looked like it had the correct handle, so I bought it, hopefully it will fit.

If I have occasion to pass by a hardware store or plumbing supply, I'll certainly look.

If anyone has a valve with the rounded handle and is willing to swap handles, I'd be happy to do that. :)

David, I looked at Snyder's website and the gas valve they show has the longer, flattened handle. Do they carry the round handle style, but just don't show it on their website?

Snyders does not carry that style valve. It's a period correct valve, and it's about the only type that doesn't leak. From what I understand there is only one manufacturer of this valve, and they only get produced when enough demand warrants it. You may wait a while.

My lame brain forgot this: if all you really need is a valve that wont leak you can probly get one of these at a plumbing place, may need some mod for the fitting into the carb. I out this on my Fordor and solved the problem. For once I threw purism out the window!!

Would I be correct in guessing that this is part of the oiling system? How about Restoration Supply?

I checked the Restoration Supply catalog and none of their valves have the correctly shaped handles. Here are a couple pictures of a different Flanders 20 (not mine) showing what the cylinder drip cups should look like, along with the drip cups I have with the incorrect handles. My drip cups are brass, not nickel as shown in the photo.

The proper term for those are "priming" cups.

Thanks all for the valuable advice, comments, and corrections!

Does anyone have short, rounded handles like the one shown in my first pic so that I can use them on my priming cups? :)

Adding to make things clear, Mark is using the shape of the handle to show what he is looking for, not the valve itself.

Thanks Mark G., you are correct. I already have four priming cups with the wrong style handles, I'm looking for any kind of valves with the correct handles so that I can swap them over to my priming cups.

I did contact the owner of the website in your link, his priming cups are custom made to order and cost $150.00 EACH! If they had been $150.00 for a set of four I would have considered it.

I'll keep looking.

Ouch! I don't know if swapping the handles would work anyway, may not have the same taper. Bit of work, but how about brazing up the handles and reshaping or cutting the old handle off leaving a stub and braze on a round handle?

Mark, the chance of finding handles that will thread into yours is slim to none. These things were made in small batches back then, and nothing was standard. If you can get the handle unthreaded, getting 4 new made to suit you would be the trick, IMHO. I have the fixer up set of 4 primer cups, $100 ppd

Early Flywheel engines used those on virtually every engine. The places that deal in parts for them have a variety of sizes and designs. Might try them.

Thanks, Stan. For the time being I have ground the handles of the priming cups I have down to a more rounded shape. Not perfect, but better. I sure hope that Hershey is a go for 2021, I'll certainly be on the prowl for some. :)
