Custom Spiral Cut Ring and Pinion Gear on EBAY
I have no connection with this item, except that I have bought from the seller several times. He is selling a custom made spiral cut ring and pinion gear for a Model T, EBAY # 254796507787. He told me that he is selling it for a friend who is in poor health and can't finish it. (apparently his friend is a machinist). By my count it is a 9-34 tooth set that figures out to a 3.77 ratio. He said the pinion gear needs finishing. He must be talking about the tapered bore on the inside of the gear where it fits on the end of the driveshaft, as the teeth look OK. It is listed at $99.99 or Best Offer. He made me a Heck of an offer if I was interested, but I told him I wasn't a machinist and wasn't interested. If any of you machinists out there are interested, contact me and I'll tell you what he said he'd sell it to me for.

Does anyone know if spiral cut gears would have an adverse effect on braking? Mushy pedal, slowed reaction time, and such like? Cheers, Bill

I came up with a set of these gears years ago... was told they were 490 Chebby, but I have never attempted to confirm. I have never tried to assemble into a Ford either...

490 gears are hard to find anyway, if that is what it is. There has been talk in the past on the Chevrolet boards about using a Model T ring gear as a replacement. I think the Ford ring gear may be a direct bolt on but not sure about the pinion gear.

UPDATE: A check on EBAY, minutes ago, revealed that the seller has marked them "out of stock" so they are no longer available. The seller did tell me that all the ring gear holes lined up with the holes on a T differential. T. Woods

Yes, the offered set is stock 490 Chevrolet, yes the bolt pattern to the differential is identical to the Model T Ford.
No, there is no difference in braking just less noise!
This is an original aftermarket spiral gear set for a Model T Ford.

Re: Custom Spiral Cut Ring and Pinion Gear on EBAY
I don't understand how these could be used in a T rear axle anyway. The shape of the gear teeth would try to pull the pinion inward into the axle housing under braking and quickly wear out the thrust flange on the drive shaft bushing behind the u joint. The drive shaft assembly is only designed to take thrust in on direction.

Re: Custom Spiral Cut Ring and Pinion Gear on EBAY
Yes the drive shaft thrust would be a problem with the stock Ford system. The Chevy 490 used double taper bearings at the pinion gear, like the 1928 Model A and later Ford rear ends. Back in the day they used a modified Ford drive shaft pinion spool with two tapered bearings. Today we have Fun Products drive shaft bearings which should take care of the thrust problem.
