Re: WTB: Hub Thread Chaser
Do the hub thread chasers have left and right hand threads to clean up threads on the spindles? I’ve never had one before.

Re: WTB: Hub Thread Chaser
The hub tool is only to clean up the thread where the hub cap goes on. The spindle, yes are left and right, would need 2 dies. One for left hand thread and another for right hand thread. The thread chaser file could do both directions. The tool made to clean up axle thread would not work, it is made for right hand thread.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Re: WTB: Hub Thread Chaser
Rich, there are thread files available which will do the job if things are not too bad. We know them as thread files. They are about 9" long and 1/2" square. Each side if each end is grooved, with 8 different threads for the 8 sides. The better ones have a gauge for each of the different thread profiles/count. They will work for both left and right hand threads. Take a spindle with you when shopping to make sure the one you uy is the correct one for your job.
Hope this helps.

Also, it is important to know that there have been batches of hubcaps made with slightly undersize threads that are going to be extremely stiff fit even on even very good threads.

Re: WTB: Hub Thread Chaser
Allan,
I have a thread file. But I am hoping to find a good thread chaser as I have 4 hubs to do and a friend might have use for it also.
Adam,
Thanks for the advice. But I am working with some very old original brass and don't want to compromise the threads.

You could buy a new one then resell here when you are done with it. The the T parts suppliers carry them. Or you could make something like what is shown in this link;

which is a copy of what is shown here;

This type works from the inside out, great if the thread is boogered up at the outside. Not easy to find and not cheap when you do.
I use a thread chaser like this to clean mine up;

Re: WTB: Hub Thread Chaser
Rich, I was sucked in by the thread drift to spindle threads. Sorry. I am blessed, having made a swap meet purchase of a Stevens tool for the job. The beauty of this tool is it can be clamped around the good portion of the thread, and then wound off to clean up damaged/dinged thread on the outside where the hubcap begins its journey.

Allan,
I'm hopeful to also be "blessed". Someone's got to have one. There's got to be one out there. As of now they just haven't seen my post.
