Post by Jonah D'Avella » Wed Feb 10, 2021 8:36 am

I an looking for some 1927 rocky mountain brakes. Even some parts to start with would be helpful.

Do your homework. Rocky Mountain, and AC brakes are very good for a 1927. I'm not speaking of the repros either. If you pay attention, you can find originals.

Since you mentioned it, I would prefer large drum AC brakes, but they seem kind of rare.

Larry Sylmore still making them as well for the small drums not for 1926-27 unfortunately. See the last MTFCA classified you have the all info there. I used them in 2 cars. Working really well.

Could be wrong, but I thought they were only for small drum.

Jonah, after you do your homework, if you conclude that "older" does not always equal "wiser" and "knowledgeable" does not always equal "helpful", then you may be on to something.

Keep at it, as there are more people willing to help you than harp at you.

Your request is clear and unambiguous, so hopefully you'll meet with success. Good luck with your search.

Jonah, You are correct AC brake are good for 1909-1925 small brake drum not for large drum. You have to use Rocky mountain Brake, it will cost you $775 plus shipping and you will be able to use your existing drums as well. Rocky Mountain Brake manufacturing Co reproduce them for over 40 years... 951-440-1451. All sets include brake rods & equalizer assembly. You have the optional pedals available for all years with cast extension. I have no link with them. Hope that help you.

Original large drum AC brakes for 26 & 27 are very good brakes. They are the ones the current RM brakes are patterned off of. They are cable operated unlike the repros.

Jonah, the reproduction rocky mountain brakes are identical to the original 26/27 ac brakes. The only difference is the ac brakes used a cable and pulley and the Rockies have an equalizer and rods.

This seems to be a common issue with people having the incorect R.M. brakes. In the case of having 09-25 R.M. brakes and needing the smaller 26-27
set. Has anyone thought of having a piece of cold rolled steel say 5/16" x 2" rolled into a apropriate sized ring, then shrinking it onto the 26-27 drum. Weld it in place and grind it smooth and round? I know that sounds like a lot of work but would make a more substantial drum for both brakes.( service & park) Some times it looks to be less work to just put a small drum rear in unless you have a Ruckstell. Just one of those $0.02 things
