Is the 490A, the early model 490 where the end of the cable just jammed up into the head and maybe was held by a set screw, or was it the later head that the end of the cable screwed onto the head? I've got one or two of the early type and need the proper cable.

I'm afraid that I don't know what was in the dashboard space. I've measured it up at 2 1/2", checked the MTFCA Speedometers manual, and came up with the 490A as the appropriate model for this 1927 Canadian T. I do see that someone has badly cut into the lower return edge of the dashboard likely where an incorrect speedometer cable was run so this old beauty has some hidden secrets that I can only wonder about.

The quest for a Stewart Warner 490A Speedometer for a 1927 Tudor continues.

Also need all the drive fittings suitable for wire wheels.

Many thanks,

Joe

Joe, I can repost the install instructions for this setup, if needed. A nice pile of Stewart literature. Just yell

Joe, I have a N.O.S. Stewart 490 speedometer head which is set up for kilometers rather than miles. Is this appropriate for Canada?

Good day, Dropacent,

I would really appreciate any information that you could share on this speedometer. It continues to elude me and the more information I have, perhaps the easier it will be to catch this elusive critter.

Hi rodelljunior,

Metric wasn't suitable for use in these parts but, after all this time, it happens that kilometers is how we now measure our miles making your particular speedometer quite suitable.

A bonus will be that going 50 on the metric dial looks a lot faster than 30 on the old scale. It will also match the feeling that going 30 mph always feels like 50 in this wonderful machines.

Many thanks for any help,

Joe

Joe, I will post in the forum this week when I have some free time. Sure wish someone at the club would archive this stuff, as it’s helpful for new T owners. I’ve posted magneto manuals and such but almost as if nobody cares for info at that level!

I posted instructions in the forum. Keep in mind, the wheel gear parts for wire wheel and wood wheel application have different parts numbers, and are different. Russ’s big book is extremely helpful when you get into the wacky world of speedometers.

Many thanks for posting your information, Dropacent.

I'm not finding your information so can you give me a hint what I should be doing to find this valuable stuff?

And many thanks for your efforts,

Good day, Dropacent,

As usual, I completely missed the obvious but finally tripped over your clearly identified Speedometer information.

I printed out all the pages and love these original document images and the quality information.

My search continues for this speedometer but I am certainly more well armed thanks to your work.

Much appreciated,

Joe
