WTB Stevens Tool for Setting Valve Lash
We are looking for a Stevens or similar fixture used to set the valve stem to solid tappet/lifter clearance.
The tool consists of two pieces. The first is a dummy valve with an adjustable length on the stem.
Once the total length from seat to tappet is determined with it, the dummy valve is transfered to the
second fixture where the clearance is established and the proper clearance ground on the stem.
I had such a tool but may have lent it out or it got buried with something else after our fire.
If someone has this tool and would be interested in selling it our Foothills Model T Club would be interested in buying it,
Thank you,
Harry Lillo

Our Foothills Model T Club met last night and everyone agreed this would be
a very useful tool for us.
Anyone out there willing to sell us one?

Re: WTB Stevens Tool for Setting Valve Lash
I have a gauge similar to the Kwik Way, but with a micrometer head on the measuring end instead of a dial indicator. I do not have the dummy valve however, which I never knew existed. Gonna make one!! Cool!Randall strickland wrote: ↑Thu Jan 27, 2022 8:56 pmKwik way also made a tool

Randall,
Thank you for posting the image of the Kwik Way unit.
I knew there were other makes but had not seen them.
Jerry,
If you were interested in selling yours we could save you the time
of making the dummy valve........
Thank you to all for checking.

I have seen this one knocking around on Ebay for a while now:

I have no connection to it, I just remember seeing it.

Re: WTB Stevens Tool for Setting Valve Lash
Joseph,
Thank you for the link to the eBay item.
I don't believe it would accomplish what we are trying to do; set the clearance between the valve and tappet.
While it would determine the needed length of the valve I believe we would need another fixture to grind the needed clearance.
If I am missing something there please let me know.
Still looking..........

https://www.ebay.com/itm/324982204474 This Is the type tool I use. For v8 fords. Had to make the adjustable false valve for .312 valve stem & use a small sleeve to center in the micrometer. This is a fairly common tool. They do come up. Be patient.

John,
Thank you for pointing out this tool. I believe I understand how it works.
Could you please post some images of your conversion and adjstable valve?
I have made an offer on the tool. Let's see if he accepts.

Re: WTB Stevens Tool for Setting Valve Lash
The rod looks about 1/2" with a 45 degree angled, stepped cylinder. Thats the false valve. Sleeving this cylinder down to .312 & using a piece of .312 rod makes the T false valve. I machined a new chunk out of aluminum for my T usage. For further accuracy/stability, I made a 1/2" od sleeve to fit the .312 rod for micrometer readings.
This tool works very well for accurate valve lash setting.

Re: WTB Stevens Tool for Setting Valve Lash
We would love to see pictures......worth a thousand words.
In particular the 1/2 inch rod (or is it a 0.312 rod) on the false valve?
I am having trouble picturing the 1/2 rod going through the valve guides to the solid lifter?
Thanks,
Harry

Center is the v8 false valve stem.( Not used.)
3rd piece is the micrometer.

Re: WTB Stevens Tool for Setting Valve Lash
John, I was able to purchase the eBay item for a reasonable price so we can now
set up our valves with solid lifters. It is possible to do so with feeler gauges but it is very time consuming.
This will definately speed things up for us.
Thank you,
Harry
