WTB: Timing Advance Linkage for Bosch Mag
Looking for a way to adjust timing on the side drive magneto. Found a couple pics of the original piece. It would be neat to find one like this that uses the original spark control rod:

Most of the Bosch linkage look like these: first 2 pictures from 3 gear catalog and last picture is of the single gear drive ( no special linkage, rod goes thru the block with the throttle). Hope this helps.

I wasn’t aware there was one that shared a hole, that may be easier to make with a bolt on arm like they do for throttlesLayden Butler wrote: ↑Fri May 20, 2022 12:25 pmMost of the Bosch linkage look like these: first 2 pictures from 3 gear catalog and last picture is of the single gear drive ( no special linkage, rod goes thru the block with the throttle). Re: WTB: Timing Advance Linkage for Bosch Mag
Both mechanisms use the spark rod.
Jacobs picture goes in front of the engine and then along side and then down to the Magneto spark arm.
Layden's picture goes underneath the pan such that the bracket is attached to the pan and a lever to the Magneto spark arm.
I would think that it would be easy to fabricate something from existing Model T parts. Under the pan seam to be the least complicated but linkages need to be tight.
Just an idea

Under the pan?????
The 5044 bracket attaches to the manifold bolts just as the assembly Jacob posted.
My last picture shows rod going thru the block.

Wow that’s awesome I really think that would be easy to make for sure! Probably get most of that at tractor supply minus the control arms! They sell those at langs.TRDxB2 wrote: ↑Fri May 20, 2022 3:23 pmBoth mechanisms use the spark rod.

Jacob, you are overthinking it. Remember, K.I.S.S. Looks at Layden’s last picture, and look no further. Also, Your mag parts are on the way! T

Re: WTB: Timing Advance Linkage for Bosch Mag
Thanks for the pictures! Does anyone have a good picture of the linkage that shares the hole in the block with throttle?

Re: WTB: Timing Advance Linkage for Bosch Mag
If you look closely at this picture (an artist rendering I believe) it must be going through the block. The image of the magneto has a casing difference than yours. The position of the advance lever suggests it needs a left to right movement vs up & down

Re: WTB: Timing Advance Linkage for Bosch Mag
So I believe now the question is, is the advance lever on that on in the down position and moves left/right? Is it possible to just move it down? I guess it wouldn’t matter cause you’re still gonna get the same amount of advance I’d just have to time it in that position on install.

If I could get my hands on a original one I could get the cast iron pieces done easily. Not machined. Now if someone wanted to make a run of new gears I would help finance that!

Re: WTB: Timing Advance Linkage for Bosch Mag
Jacob, the contraption you are looking for at your first post is for the early T engine, with 2 piece valve side covers. . Your engine has the later single side cover with the carb rod passing through, and you really only need to make a timer rod to go through the same hole, as Layden shared in his last pic. Makes no difference to me either way, but the magneto itself also has an advance lever that is adjustable to 360 degrees, so is easily adjustable and will work with either side to side motion or up and down motion. The complicated one you don’t have or the simple single wire which you can easily bend up.

Re: WTB: Timing Advance Linkage for Bosch Mag
I think you mean to say "for an earlier (non generator) motor". The 2 valve cover motors could have generator mounts. This bolt on advance bell crank unit is for the earlier non generator block aluminum multi gear bosch mag mount if I am understanding the situation correctly. I am not clear which type mag drive is being used. The 2 types pictured are very different & specific to the year of the block.Dropacent wrote: ↑Sun May 22, 2022 8:18 pmJacob, the contraption you are looking for at your first post is for the early T engine, with 2 piece valve side covers. . This is what he has, John, with a motor that has the carb rod coming through the valve cover. I sold it to him. Just trying to give him good helpful info, and not chase stuff he doesn’t need.

Just my humble opinion , but it’s the sweetest mag setup ever made.

Re: WTB: Timing Advance Linkage for Bosch Mag
Agreed. I use one for my Stutz ign. It is designed to fit generator motors. 1 drive gear that is readily available.
An additional arm thru the throttle rod hole would make for simple setup. I will bank the idea for bosch mag applications. Need to move up or add a spark lever further up the spark lever rod near the position of the throttle lever. The Stutz unit has a bell crank to convert to front/aft advance.
I took a trip to the magneto mount department & did find a homemade linkage unit that was on the drive unit off my '14 when I got it. It looks similar to those others shown & mount to 2 of the 4 mag mount bolts. An original linkage adapter must be very close to unobtanium. Who would part with one off a mag drive? Who would know what it was if not attached?
If this fellow insists on it, I think he will have to build one. Wouldnt be difficult. I think I would use 2 spark or throttle levers, but I do like the cleanliness & simplicity of the thru block rod. Half the monkey motion also.

Re: WTB: Timing Advance Linkage for Bosch Mag
Thanks guys! I’ve been discussing with another member here and I think we got it figured out! I’ll make a post with pics once it’s all lined out!
I was curious if it was 360 degrees so that’s very helpful to know! Makes it even easier honestly, looks like all it really needs is 35 degrees of motion.
