You mean a "ball cap" ? That's another name for it.

Re: WTB 4th main bearing cup
Layden, why don't you send him a free copy of the Parts Book?
Chuck
while you're waiting for your free parts book, contact Joe Bell in Ohio for a ball cap that is bored to your exact needs. Worn out ball caps aren't generally worth the price of postage (really!) and Joe seems to keep rebuilt/rebored ones in stock. Check member listing on the forum and shoot him an email.

Gene French can also supply any size, re-poured ball caps as well. I have a supply of cores if needed.

Re: WTB 4th main bearing cup
How do you remove the back side of the ball cap? I am trying to get the transmission off a 19. The cap looks very rusted.
Thanks
Scott

Re: WTB 4th main bearing cup
In the car, there are 4 bolts that hold the drive shaft to the back of the transmission thru the 4th main. If those 4 bolts are out, nothing but gasket adhesive is keeping it in place.wmscottsutherland wrote: ↑Sat Dec 10, 2022 5:05 pmHow do you remove the back side of the ball cap? Re: WTB 4th main bearing cup
I'm not conveying what the problem is. See Pic and you will see the ball cap on the end of the shaft. I can not get that off. The oil pan is gone now. Its on older picture.

Re: WTB 4th main bearing cup
That cap has a babbit bearing and it will need to be rebabbited and bored to size. The clutch spring should almost certainly be replaced, too.
Given that, I see no downside to simply putting a torch on it and heating it until the babbit yields from the output shaft
Afterwards, if the output shaft is in good enough condition to save (very likely), then any babbit that is stuck to it can be cleaned off during its restoration and resurfacing

In the left margin there is a list of links to numerous books. The listings of parts books by year goes on for two pages
