The bushing on the end is threaded(RHT) Look inside where the starter shaft runs. Note the body hat 2 upsets.(one in each of the 1/8" holes)
Un divot those upsets. The bushing will unscrew.
The difficulty comes with grabbing the bushing & turning the body or visa versa. I made a special block with 2 1/8"pins to lock into the bushing & put a bolt into the body to grab. Thats 5/16 nf in the threaded spring anchor point in the body.

Another way that can work is soft aluminum jaws in the bench vise to hold the collar as you rotate the Bendix screw. Punch away the two divots that locks the collar.

Thread a bolt into the the Bendix to use as a lever, a length of pipe adds to the ease, to turn the screw out of the collar.

Don't forget to re-punch the threaded shaft against the collar , to keep the collar locked there after the gear has been changed. (First photo)

John & Dan,
Excellent descriptions gentlemen. What have you guys been doing for loose balance rings?
Craig.

I replace them - some folks like to braze or weld them tight again but I've not had luck with that remedy !

Press back into place & braze the contact points where the gear & counter weight meet. Very clean metal(bead blasted) Heat only small, specific areas, about 3/16" contact points to keep the gear from losing temper. At least 100 done this way. No issues. Never to get loose again.
