Replacing top bow without replacing top?

I think that this is an impossible task but I thought I would ask. My 26 touring has a bad bow right at the front. I can't really understand what happened to it. Every other one is rock solid but the front one is not broken, it seems to have just disintegrated inside the canvas. It somehow is completely flexible all the way across. If the top was bad it would be no big thing to buy or make a new piece of wood and just replace it but it is a nice top and I don't want to replace it yet.

I have considered taking a piece of 3/4 flat steel and just making a reinforcement of sorts to go on the back side of the bow until I am ready to get to doing a proper repair. Any better ideas?
