Does anybody have just one NOS narrow cotton band liner? My brake band is toast, but the 1 and reverse bands are in great shape, and I really would rather not have to switch the transmission over to kevlar or wood.

Robert, how do you propose to fit just one band? If you have to remove the hogshead to do it, it makes no sense to leave two part worn cotton bands in place.

I picked up one cotton band during the great Kevlar famine ( my prepper instinct kicked in ) now that Kevlar is readily available & I stocked up
on Scandinavia linings & I don't think I will live long enough to use up my stock. This one is 22 1/2' long & the stain looks to be rust but there is no sign of deterioration. I have no idea what I paid for this one but it can be had for a reasonable offer & shipping. Craig.

With the red and green edging, that one looks to be an original Montgomery Wards band liner. Had a set of them on my Speedster and liked how they felt. Same story though; the brake band wore much faster that the low or reverse. You can see the colored edging in the attached photo I took right after I installed them.

The cotton band lining in my car is similar to what Dave has in his car. After about 800 miles of break in, the bands only occasionally need to be adjusted. They now have over 3000 miles and doing well. I have only one more spare set of cotton linings, which should take me to the end of my driving, unless I really get lucky.

Thanks to everyone who replied: I have secured a band from somebody that sent me an email. In response to Allan's question, the hogshead is already off for other purposes(only a 20 minute project to remove it, although a bit fiddly to refit),and the brake band has worn to paper thin and popped two of the rivets. So I decided to renew just the band that is giving me trouble. Once the others start to go (I haven't needed to adjust them in over 2 years of driving), I'm planning on switching to wood for all 3. As others have pointed out here, sometimes the brake band wears more quickly than the drive bands (I expect especially when engine braking isn't used extensively as it should be for a 'T'). MY story is that the PO abused it!

Robert, the brake band does wear more quickly. The way it operates is the reason. It is the one band which is meant to slip on the drum, and this slippage is what causes the accelerated wear. Should you lock up the drum and skid the wheels, you can reduce this wear. Low gear and reverse, besides seeing less use, are meant to slip only as they lead to engagement on the drum. With the band clamping the drum to stop it turning, the required gear is selected. Slipping the first gear and reverse bands is not good practice.

I wish I had your attitude to hogshead removal/replacement. I find it a bear of a job, even with practice and some helpful aids. There is no way I would not replace all three bands while the cover was off. Doing the whole job again a bit later on to do another band change is a pain. As for leaving part worn cotton linings in place, that will mean having to do the job sooner rather than later. Your mileage may vary.
