Please explain "w/o drop edge" - I have a wood firewall top gutter piece.

Our Canadian sourced cars with a wooden firewall came with thin [think tinplate] metal cover on the sides, from the relief for the hood hinge down to the bottom. This was nailed on and the hood lacing was nailed over the top of it. Are you looking for a similar piece to go across the top, without the rain gutter? I can't recall ever seeing one.

Here is a picture of one. Sorry to all for slow responses as I’ve been very busy coaching and starting building a house this week. Thanks, AJ Eyre

Adam, thanks for the photo. I have never seen the like. Perhaps you would have what you need by cutting the rain gutter off a later one. On our Canadian sourced cars there is a crescent shaped relief in the wooden firewall to accommodate the hood hinge rod. I can't see this in your photo. Our rain gutters terminate at this relief, and short separate sections finish off the firewall down each side.

The metal will shed water. It likely there to protect the edges of the wooden firewall/veneer from water ingress. On our Canadian cars the top cover with the rain gutter had holes drilled and the nails which held the welting also held the rain gutter piece in place, with the addition of a screw into the side of the piece at the centre under the hood centre hinge rod. The bits of tin on the lower sides were not drilled. The nails which hold the welting on also held the thin metal strip in place.

Adam/Mark,

This piece was missing on my '21 Runabout. Most of them are, because they were made of a thin, cheap piece of tin and they simply rusted away. Good news is, however, they are made of a thin, cheap piece of tin! For my car, we used tin strip of the proper width, and just turned over the edges. The edges are fairly narrow, which also makes it easy to form. You could do it over a seperate form or possibly just form it in place, on the firewall.

It's in 3 pcs., correct? A top piece and two side pieces, with a gap in between to clear the hood hinges? (My car is not on-site to have a direct look, or take pictures.)

I should re phrase what I wrote, the parts book (1921) list them but does not show them. Also does not say gutter type or not. Unlike later, parts numbers didn't change by adding a letter after them like became the norm later.

I would be taking up the one Steve has offered. The thing is more complicated than it looks. Because it is angled at the ends to follow the taper in the hood sides, it becomes three dimensional rather than just a flat piece with folded edges. The one he shows is a pressing, with the correct angled ends. It just needs the gutter cut of and that bit of centre bracket added. It is likely of somewhat heavier gauge metal than the tinplate side pieces.

Allan,

Is that how the gutterless trim piece was made on your car?

Good luck Adam.
