For Sale - Enco 4 position tool holder (2 1/2) for South Bend Lathe
I purchased this gently used, about 30 years ago (I believe it was NOS, but do not expect to prove it) and have used it only once. It is high quality (surprising what they made years ago!) and fits my 9" South Bend lathe compound perfectly...HOWEVER, I believe it is for a 10K (which has the same compound, but higher centers) as it is a bit high for 9" lathe so I simply ground HSS bits to the proper centerline and it worked fine (I ground 3 tools for it and probably spent more time on the tools than they spent working in the lathe...they are not for sale). The other alternative would be to modify the base to drop it's center height for a 9" lathe, which can be done, as the material the base is made from is not hardened and can be machined.
It's in perfect shape, and indexes solidly and repeatably. Unfortunately, I cannot find the original box, but it was perfect when I purchased it. There are no crashes or stupid stuff done to it like you usually see on lathe tooling, however, I do see handling/storage marks on the aluminum name plate and can be seen in photo).
I am upgrading this lathe to Aloris tooling like my other 2 lathes, so this is now surplus.
If, after you purchase this, you find that you cannot or do not want to adapt it to your lathe, I will refund purchase price if returned in same condition and within a reasonable period of time. I do not want an unhappy buyer, or for you to feel "stuck" with a tool you will not or cannot use.
$75 + actual postage

Scott:
used an enco indexable tool post like this for years they work well and are accurate … BUT , the modern "Aloris" type or Chinese knockoff sure beats them hands down … adjustable tool height and rigid … someone should be glad to have this enco post at this price … too small for any of my 3 lathes and they all have modern tool post … good luck on the sale ...always an optimist ...gene french

Scott if I did not already have all of my equipment set up with quick change, I would be on your holder in a heart beat!

Would this work on an 11" Sheldon lathe with a similar tool post? Bill

Bill
it is almost certain to be too short/small for an 11" Sheldon, but thanks for asking.

Re: For Sale - Enco 4 position tool holder (2 1/2) for South Bend Lathe
Howdy, Scott. Do you think your Enco tool holder would work with my 10" Pow'r Kraft/Clausing lathe? The height from compound to center is 7/8". I have adapted some 9" South Bend tool post tool holders and actually had to mill them down a little. Don't remember how much.
I hope y'all are well and enjoying a nicer summer than we are around here. Bob

Re: For Sale - Enco 4 position tool holder (2 1/2) for South Bend Lathe
Bill and Bob, the distance from the top face of the lathe compound (foot/mounting of the tool post) to the top of the tool post slot (if you had the largest tool inserted with no grinding) is 1 1/4" inches. In other words a tool could be sharpened and inserted into the tool post and the tip would be 1 1/4" above the compound mounting surface...if the lathe center is anywhere near or a little below that, you'd be good to go.
Of course, being made for a South Bend, the base fits the South Bend like a glove. If you desired to lower the toolpost a bit and had the mill to do it, you could custom fit to your individual compound slot and put the tool height exactly where you wanted it...

Hi, Scott, thanks for checking on that. Seems like it will take quite a bit of work to make it fit the Pow'r Kraft. Somebody with a South Bend could make better use of it. I guess I'll pass on it. Thanks again, Bob
