New US-Made Rims and Wheels

Some months ago Steve Jelf mentioned that he'd heard of a company in Florida that made wheels for classic cars. I tracked them down and learned that the owner, Rodrigo Diaz, was in the process of developing demountable, non-demountable and split-rims for Model T's. I offered my help and encouragement and thru this process we became friends. I've shared some info about the Model T hobby with him and tested a couple of his prototypes on my 1917 Touring. I'm impressed by the quality of his products and can recommend them without hesitation. I have absolutely no financial interest in his company. My interest lies in promoting the Model T hobby. There's a lot more to the story but rather than make this post uncomfortably long I have put together a informative pdf which I've attached.

I realize that by recommending a commercial business I may be crossing a line but I feel it important to get the word out. I previously spent hundreds of dollars importing a pair of rims from Australia that turned out to be totally useless so having a quality source of US-made rims can only help the hobby.

When I spoke with Rodrigo a week ago he said he hadn't received a site number yet. He's going to let me know and I will post it. He and his daughter are planning to attend and bring a selection of their wheels and rims.

Any idea how much they are charging for the rims?

Thanks for space numbers. If I can get loose from my spaces for one day I will try and go look at them. Dan

You can buy used rims for around $100 but they are often corroded (especially on the inside) and may have sharp edges on the "clincher" that have been known to cut tires. You can file the edges down but then you have less holding the tire. The main problem is that good original rims are getting harder to find, at least in my experience. Considering the uncertainty of the steel supply and generally higher prices across the board, I think Rodrigo's prices are reasonable. Remember, Model T rims are a small market and are not mass produced. Rodrigo makes each rim or wheel individually and each requires several steps in the fabrication process and specialized tooling. For me, I'm glad that quality new rims are available. I have some less than perfect rims that I am replacing with his new ones. After all, wheels are kinda important aren't they?
