Just dismantled the front axle assembly and discovered that the spindle bolts have worn the axle holes badly. The bolts wobble all about and the threads are now just a suggestion. Looking for a replacement axle (but in much better condition) before going the repair route on this one.

Correct me if I’m wrong - and I know someone will but didn’t 1927 front axles have a very gradual ‘dip’ built into the center ? If so, were you necessarily looking for this?

You are correct George - the "Improved" Fords had a definite dip in the front axle - I have a NOS one standing against the wall in the shop !

Sounds like a job for Stevens Front Axle Tool. Dan

This axle is indeed dipped with the middle being lower than the ends. The bend that I'm concerned with is the front to back shape. A "pulled out of a ditch by the axle" looking bend. I've read here that cold pressing it works but don't use heat as it affects the heat treatment of this tough little axle.

I appreciate your comment about shipping costs, Hank, but this might be the cheapest option. There is no one close to me that can handle machining an axle so I will have to ship it where there is skill and ability to do the job right, pay to have the restoration done, and then ship it back again.

If you have a usable axle, I will only have to pay for the axle and one way shipping to North Dakota.

If that works for you, how can we arrange this?

You nailed it, Dan. According to my collected minutes of wisdom watching on-line videos, this axle definitely needs the skilled application of the Stevens Front Axle Tool and the addition of the inserts to restore needed clearances and threads. This poor axle has only the faintest suggestion of threads remaining and the top holes are now more like patterns for eggs than of circles.

Having had my axle reworked -strengthened, ends aligned and 1 spindle thread repaired - I think it would have been less expensive to have purchased a good axle rather than repair the one I had.

Problem is finding a good Axle. Most are in the same shape as the one he has. One year at Hershey everyone was complaining they could not find good Axles. So, next year I repaired some and brought them. No one wanted to pay what I had in them, they wanted a good Axle for $5.00. Dan

Life is good when you have a great front axle. Thanks to Hank, my axle quest is a total success.

Only 2,879 days to go to get ready for the 100th birthday so better get back to work.

1 down and only 14,657 more parts to go and this T is back on the road.

Axle and tie rod resolved -- thank you, MTFCA.

Just curious - My '27 Touring's front axle definitely does not have a dip in the center. Does the tudor use a different axle? I have no reason to believe that the axle has ever been replaced.

All "Improved" cars had the dipped axle - pretty sure it had to do with the design change of the lowered spindles & front spring.
