I need a couple of pieces of 1" wide black leather used is fine if its not to dry and hard. Does some one have a old broken front top strap for a 1911-12? Need a 8" and a 16" 17" piece if longer that's great . Thanking you in advance for checking and any leads. Dave

Saddle shops
Upolstry shops
Second hand stores
Craft stores

Maybe find a few belts that are real leather.

I've used the strap on lady's handbags purchased for under $5 at Hospice, Goodwill, or thrift stores.

Roadkill is a good source. A mate of mine calls the lounge suites left on the kerb for anyone to collect roadkill. I have a mass of salvaged black leather from a 4 seater lounge suite in my stash, enough to do the upholstery in my 1/2 ton lorry if I ever get around to it.

David:

The next time you are in the Twin Cities, go to Tandy Leather at 8901 Penn Ave in Bloomington. In addition to their regular leather stock, they also sell miscellaneous pieces of scrap leather in various sizes and thickness.

You can dye the leather with Fiebing's Black Leather Dye. It's getting harder to find at local shoe repair places but it is readily available online. Also, Fleet Farm in Lakeville might carry it in the shoe/boot department and/or horse care/tack and saddle area.

Unfortunately, the best place for getting leather straps cut and shaved to desired thickness was Schatzlein Saddle Shop on Lake Street in Minneapolis but they closed in 2022 after being in business for 115 years. That's where my father went for various projects over the years.
