ISO 30 x 3 1/2 standard ford steel fellow

Post by dhosh » Tue Jul 23, 2019 11:15 pm

I ordered new hickory spokes from Snyder's for a standard Ford 30 x 3 1/2 wheel , with 1/2" tenons. They are 1/32" to short... And I didn't check, until I stained them to match the other 95 year old wheels! Apparently, I have a Kelsey Hayes fellow, and should have ordered the proper spokes. :-(

So... One option is to replace my rim with a standard Ford 30 x 3 1/2 steel fellow.... Assuming the hubs are the same.

Hi,
Hubs are same, but the rims needed probably aren't.
Kelsey 88 (loose lug) rims won't go on Ford felloes.
That 1/32" is also in the felloe radius.
Someone may be able to post the Ford service picture to help you diagnose your parts.
Hope this helps.

Dennis, can you post some pictures of what you need along with some measurements? I have a few felloes around here. May be to spendy for shipping from here in NW MO. though. Shouldn't be too hard to find one closer to you. Just a thought. Dave

Dennis, welcome to the state of confusion re T wheels. Your mention of a Kelsey Hayes felloe only adds to the confusion. Both Kelsey and Hayes, as independent manufacturers, supplied wheels and rims for the T. Kelsey-Hayes as conglomerate is a later development.

Kelsey supplied wheels which took the Kelsey 88 loose lug demountable rims. The felloes for these have a slit dumped in the inside diameter of the felloe, onto which one leg of the detachable lug registered.

Hayes made wheels to take rims with attached lugs. These differ from other fixed lug rims in that the lugs have a foot on them which requires a relief in the felloe so the rim can be bolted in place. It is this one detail which makes Hayes rims usable only on Hayes felloes. Other fixed lug rims can be used on wheels of different manufacturers, including Kelsey loose lug wheels.

If your felloe has the pressed in slots at each bolt hole, it is for loose lug rims. Such wheels do require slightly longer spokes. If you use them, you can mount loose lug rims of course, and fixed lug rims other than those made by Hayes.

Hope this helps.

Yes... A bit of a state of confusion. This wheel did have a tab-less clincher rim on it when I got it, and does have dimples between , as well as 4 holes for tabbed rim mountung bolts. It also had spokes that are 1/32 longer than the Ford 'standard' spokes that I ordered.

I'm getting rid of the tab-less clincher rim, so all my rims are the same. What I am looking for is what I assume is a standard Ford steel fellow, 1/2" tenon holes, that I can use the new spokes on, as I have already stained them. Otherwise I'll just have to order the longer spokes, and try to sell my stained ones.

Sorry.. I don't have photos of what I need... Only, what I have, currently.

Someone at a local Flywheeler's show, reminded me about a T shop about 40 miles from here... If he's still has his stuff and hasn't retired, yet!

Dennis, that is a Kelsey loose lug felloe. It is not as deep in cross section as the type wich takes the fixed lug rims. Hence the need for the slightly longer spokes. If your new ones are short, they are the correct ones for the later plain rims which take the fixed lug rims. So, finding a felloe without the slots is the answer.

I found what appears to be the correct fellow, and a good 4 tab clincher rim to boot! Plus, a somewhat close T guy, is bringing over a spare wheel, so I can get my ride back on the road, while I rebuild my wheel. How cool is that? :-)
