Wanted: AC brake parts

Post by Stephen_heatherly » Wed Dec 11, 2019 12:44 pm

I recently bought a set of small drum ac brakes for my 23 runabout. As is usually the case, the whole linkage set up is missing. Does anyone have an original linkage set for ac brakes? These are operated by a wire rope and pulley system hooked up to the brake pedal. Please let me know if you have a complete set or part of one that you're willing to sell.

Thank you,
Stephen

Here are some period advertising pictures showing the original setup. Larry Smith is familiar with all the parts and has assembled at least one complete setup for one of his cars.

Hope to do my AC brakes the same way this winter. Would like to see some detailed pictures to help me fabricate mine.

What baffles me is why both Rocky Mountain and AC repro's have chosen to use rods instead of the original cable set up's which is so much easier to do. It doesn't make sense to me. But what do I know? I have original Rocky Mountain brakes on three of my cars.

I could share my own experience. I started to used my AC brakes with cables as original and I found it is not good enough for a brake stability perspective but again it is my perception. So I changed for the rods instead cables and it work much better on my Touring. But again it is probably something personal. If someone is please with cables, it is good either.

Richard Baughman made the AC Branke linkage and it is work fantastic! he's email: richandbertie@gmail.com

Larry Sidmore still making AC Brakes. See bellow pictures and hope that help you.

Larry,
AC brakes don't come with the linkage.
He leaves it up to the buyer to decide which method to use.

John Stoltz@ Model T Ranch Makes a equalizer & pedal for setting up large drum brakes to work with the pedel. It looks just like the one for Rockies. I think it will work with just about any outside brake set up. My first set of outside brakes I built a cable system using Chevy truck park brake cables & equalizer, it worked good. I also converted to rods but didn't notice any improvemet how ever I do have a constant rattle to let me know they are still hooked up.

I use a Model T ranch equalizer set up with rods for the original AC's on my 22 coupe. The rods have a set of anti rattle support brackets on them. I needed the rods to eliminate any side to side movement in the brakes as they were a tight fit with hassle rear shocks. Seem to work well, I did add some return springs on the brake peddle.
