Remember Me

Post by #2shadetree » Tue Feb 05, 2019 3:55 pm

How is the Remember Me box supposed to work? I check it each time I log in, but I am never remembered on a subsequent visit to the site.

We (mainly Jeff) have been looking at this, but no solution has been found yet.

I guess I can add to this thread, another related question, and maybe a data point. A fact of my life is that I get interrupted a LOT! Added to I type slow, if I do not check the "remember me" box, I get timed out usually before I can finish typing a reply to a thread. It seems to time me out at around fifteen minutes, even if I am viewing or typing. I lost a few typed responses (my fault I am sure) because I had to sign in again before I could submit the reply. I somewhat solved part of that by opening a second tab to re-sign in on, however, it was still annoying. By checking the "remember me" box, I stay signed in all day long, whether I am actively using the site or not.
I am not sure I really like being kept in quite to that extent. For one thing, in theory, I could sign in, then croak, and remain here for many years to come! On the other hand, maybe that would actually be a nice thing. Any way you look at it, this is one of those things that will never work best in all circumstances, no matter how you set it up.

Another thing. At least twice now (last night I am absolutely certain), I have "logged out" as I shut the computer down for its night's sleep. The next day, I go to the site, and find I am already, or still, logged in. Most nights, even if I checked the "remember me" box? The next day, I need to sign in again as I think it should be. However, a few times in the past weeks, I have been fairly sure I had logged out, and the next day found I was still in, red and blue colored icons telling me where I have been and all. It had happened a couple days ago. Last night, I paid special attention as I logged out. I watched closely after I logged out, a momentary blank, followed by the screen with all the icons, all in blue. My name was gone in the upper right corner, no indication that I was still in. I shut the computer down and went to sleep. This morning, I got up, took care of some things, eventually went to this site, and found red and blue icons, correctly indicating where I had and had not been, and my name in the upper right corner.
Was I logged in all night? Or was my computer recognized and logged in automatically?
Mostly, I am just wondering.

Thank you Chris B and Jeff!

On other sites, the "Remember Me" function is only for the user name and you must log in to the site each time you visit. If you use Firefox, just click in the user name box and it will appear. If you don't log out, the site should kick you out for security when you close the browser or go to another site. I'm a firm believer in logging in for each new session.

I notice this issue has stated again for me. I now need to log in every time I come here and sometimes I need to log in again while here to post. I dumped the cookies and checked the remember me box but still the same. It has been so long since I had to log in before that I forgot my password and it took a while to find it. Something has changed since the hacker fight.

Not sure why you two are having issues. I’ve checked all the following:

Internet explorer 6,7
Edge
Firefox
Chrome
Chrome canary (beta)
Safari
iPhone chrome
iPhone safari
Galaxy 7 chrome

They all work with Remember Me. Not much else I can try. And it seems to be working for most everyone else.

I am also using Windows 7 & Chrome. I have to log in every time as well, even though I click the "remember me" box!

I still need to log in every time I come here and sometimes again when I post. It did this before it was "fixed" and now after the hacker the problem is back and on top of that all the avatars are now gone. Guess the hackers messed this site up good.

Sorry folks, not much we can do. It’s all working on the server end. A few folks have browsers and systems that just don’t play nice.
