Why a User Name?

Post by Steve Jelf » Wed Jan 09, 2019 11:10 am

What is the reason for using an alias for the User Name? Is there a reason not to use your real name?

I really never gave it a thought because I just carried the same ID over from the other site. I guess since your name shows up at the right side of the threads it really doesn't matter.

I thought it was like the other forum, now I'm stuck with it.

Varmint....the wife and I are headed to your fair city in a couple weeks to celebrate my 50th birthday.

We're staying in the French Quarter, taking the carriage "ghost tour", eating beignets, etc. Anything else you recommend?

I was surprised that the user names are displayed I the forum. Its primary a login username not meant to be shown in public, me thinks.
This is an explanation from the web:
Alternatively referred to as an account name, login ID, and user ID, username or username is the name given to a user on a computer or computer network. This name is commonly an abbreviation of the user's full name or his or her alias. For example, an individual known as John Smith may be assigned the username of smitj, which is the first four letters of the last name followed by the first letter of the first name.

I think it is great that the forum is requiring full names be posted, especially if you are planning on purchasing from someone or using a service provided by the person. This allows you to do proper research as to their past dealings! There is a difference between using a "nickname" & hiding behind an alias!

I bet that quite a few of these user names are probably used on sensitive websites so be careful- you've exposed half of your login info...

A good reason to use a user name different from your real name is that it keeps you at least one step removed from someone doing a Google Search on your name.

The most obvious example is for a current or potential employer. If they google your name and find that you are posting to a Model T Forum 20 times a day during business hours, they may question your usefulness/dedication to the company!

Based on the amount they post, I wonder how some of my Facebook friends hold on to their jobs!

Mine doesn't say much & my avitar obviously isn't me + when I saw my first & last names on the right side I altered that too. Goes to "need to know".

I did something similar to what I had done before, put in my user name, but didn't realise that it would be displayed as the posting name too. Before on the other forum, nobody knew me by that name unless they PM'd me (because that's where it shows up on the old forum format), but now it is out plain as day for all to see and I don't think many know me by that name.

The only way to change it (I think) is either to get Chris B to change it as your account name or just start a new account...either way it's a bother, you guys are just going to have to get used to seeing that moniker and know that it is me. ;)
Fun never quits!
