I`m trying to replace the Starter Drive Sleeve which spins freely at the head of the starter drive. This piece dosen`t want to slip off of the shaft and I`m wondering how to remove it----anyone have this problem? Seems like the shaft might be a bit distorted from years of operation---can I force the sleeve off to replace it? Thanks for your suggestions----Paul

It has two thin strips that are staked into a groove in the end of the Bendix, see the linked drawing.

You need to pull up the two staked strips before the sleeve will slide off. Be sure to stake the strips on the new sleeve after you install it.

Thankyou, Mark-----I think I`ve found those two thin strips at the end of the bendix. How to "pull up" to release the drive sleeve? Do the two holes in the end sleeve release the strips to pull them up? I can`t find the "strips" on the link you provided but note the end sleeve with the 2 holes as shown....Am I headed in the direction with this? Many thanks for your help!

You'll probably need a pick or very small screwdriver to get under the staked strips and pry them up.

Here are pictures of a partially disassembled Bendix with a closeup of the staked strips.

Thanks for those clear photos---mines different and the "new sleeve won`t fit. would mine be a different version? Not sure how to remove/ replace it? thanks for any input----Paul

That's an original sleeve - have to cut it off if cracked (Dremel works good) - should attempt to move this over to the regular discussion forum !

Replace it with the new one - is it cracked ???

A slight crack at one "flange" (kind of visable on upper flange in the photo I sent). Guess I could weld it up, but prefer to replace it----Looks like the new replacement will require some thin metal inserts at the base ? What /where can I find these? Thanks!

The new one requires nothing extra. Slip on the new sleeve, then simply bend down the narrow strip running between the two slits, (do this on both sides of the sleeve). This pushes the strips down, where they will engage with a slot in the Bendix shaft, preventing the sleeve from coming off. You'll see the slot once you've removed your old sleeve.
