Forum crashes - we know how to fix it!!!

Sometimes the hardest problems to fix end up with the simplest solutions of all... that reminds me of this classic story:

Once upon a time John and his young son Philip were driving through town when they came upon a traffic jam. Up ahead they could see that a large School Bus with a high load had become wedged in a tunnel.
920879CD-6F60-4DBA-B3D3-98774E02F8BB.jpeg
The father experienced only the frustration of being held up while his son experienced a world of unbelievable wonder. There were police everywhere and fire trucks, a big crane and even a train that was forced to stop at the approach to the bridge.

While John sat in the car fuming, his son Philip could no longer contain himself. He sprang out of the car and raced away towards all the important people in suites, wearing yellow hats, all trying to figure out what to do.

“I know how to get the bus out!” he cried out. The men were more concerned for the boy’s safety and shooed him away. The young fellow persisted until he found someone who would listen – all the time dragging an exhausted dad behind him.

“What do you think we should do?” asked the man. “If you want to get the bus out all you have to do is let the air out of the tires!”

QED

So.. a long story now shortened, in our case I finally figured out that our server has been running out of memory, mostly because of the extreme volume of air that is at a very high temperature being expelled by all of us on the forum... anyway, the fix is really easy, we need to add more memory to the server that hosts our forums.

That will be worked on over the next few days by folks who are above my pay grade (I work for free). So hang in there. A real solution to all this is forthcoming.

I can relate. Sometimes I run out of memory when I go looking for a tool. When that happens my project is blocked.

Just wondering...is that a result of posting pictures with so many KB s ?

Would smaller picture sixze (in KBs, not inches) have prevented that?

Just thinking ahead, Jeff..... Dave's thought about all those large-sized pictures consume a lot of memory. Toss in the 'old Forums' for history's sake, and it fills quickly. Unless there are Tera-Bytes of storage available, picture size limits (1 MB?) could make sense. Don't most phones provide that, or close to it? Just thinking, here.....

File size limits are unneeded. Photos are not stored as large files. Your 1 MB+ picture is automatically resized. I just looked at a couple of mine that I posted full size, and both are under 200 KB.

Sounds like the 'problem' has been solved before thinking of it! NICE!!! :D

Steve, I agree the pictures shown on the forum text are resized to a smaller size which helps our speed impaired members. However when you click on the picture you get the original sized picture. This has to be stored somewhere and that could be the problem.
Maybe this feature needs to be eliminated to contain on-going costs.

EXACTLY. the type of memory blocking is determined by the current state of intoxication. I have my *entire* shop automated.
I tell Alexa "Alexa, turn on Shop". Magical things happen next! Here's my loop.

START SHOP.LOOP()

TURN.ON.ALL.LED.SHOP.LIGHTS()
START.ROCK.N.ROLL.MUSIC.ON.PANDORA()
TURN.VOLUME.UP()
EXECUTE BEGIN.WORKING.ON.CAR()

WHILE USER.CANT.FIND.TOOL=TRUE DO

IF INTOXICATION == COFFEE_ONLY THEN
GET.MORE.COFFEE()
SEARCH.FOR.TOOL.AGAIN()
EXECUTE BEGIN.WORKING.ON.CAR()

IF INTOXICATION == BEER AND BEERS NOT = 6 THEN
GET.ONE.MORE.BEER()
SEARCH.FOR.TOOL.AGAIN()
EXERCISE.CAUTION.AROUND.TOOLS()
EXECUTE BEGIN.WORKING.ON.CAR()

IF INTOXICATION == TEQUILIA THEN
SEARCH.FOR.TOOL.AGAIN=FALSE
PUT.ALL.SHOPTOOLS.DOWN()
IF VISION = BLURRY THEN
SIT.ON.SHOP.STOOL()
STARE.ADMIRINGLY.AT.CAR.FOR.HOURS()

IF WIFE.ENTERS.SHOP==TRUE THEN
EXPLAIN.TO.WIFE.WHY.YOURE.STARING.ADMIIRINGLY.AT.CAR()
SWITCH.TO.COFFEE()
TELL.WIFE.COMING.TO.BED.SOON()

ELSE IF WIFE.ENTERS.SHOP=FALSE
TAKE.ONE.MORE.SHOT.OF.TEQUILIA()
CONTINUE STARE.ADMIRINGLY.AT.CAR.FOR.HOURS() UNTIL
CANT.KEEP.EYES.OPEN == TRUE
ENDIF

REPEAT SHOP.LOOP() UNTIL HANDS=TOO.STIFF.TO.CONTINUE

there might be a few bugs to work out, but you get the idea. And you thought you couldn't be a programmer?

Hey there Admin Jeff, If I were to tell you a few actually true stories about computers and myself? You might ban me here. I worked in cutting edge technologies for thirty years and my fingerprints are all over the foundation of the internet. However, back in the early days of home computers? When they weren't as well designed and built yet? All i had to do was walk into a room, touch NOTHING, and computers would crash.
Hasn't been a problem for quite a few years now. I think.

Did you check the “Use Legacy Interpreter” option box before trying to compile it? I alway use that mode especially when the wife is in the room....

I feel the transition has been very smooth, very few glitches. Thank you for your good work. This forum is a little different, but if one can keep a T running one can navigate this new forum.

My only suggested change, when everything else is up to speed, it to change the avatar settings so the picture used will be clearer.

Jeff I appreciate all the hard work you do to keep this thing going. Do we need to do a fund raiser or special donation to get more memory to you? I would be happy to help seeing how you've me over the years with this forum.

Jim, I’ve only been helping out for the past week or so. Chris is the Grand Poobah who’s likely been helping you.
And thanks for the offer, but I think we’ve got the memory covered. Should be updated by tomorrow with any luck.

Once you're here, you can bookmark or save to favorites.
You can get here from the old forum, just takes a couple steps.
Here's the latest links to save...

www.mtfca.com is the national website and has a link to the forums there. That’s not too hard to remember. Or the longer version, www.modeltfordclubofamerica.com - this site has a direct link to this Forum.

Both have links to the forums that work. We’ve made sure of it!

Did something change in the logon cookie properties in the last week? Was the expiration shortened? Can it be lengthened?

I used to stay logged in for days, or at least didn't have to re-log-on when I came back to the 2019 forum. But starting this weekend, or maybe Monday, every time I'm off the forum or a few hours I have to log on again. And yes, I'm clicking the "remember me" button.

I’m looking into this issue. I tried a change this afternoon to no avail. There are other places to look. Using https has its own set of challenges. But the added security is worth it.

Both ways back IN here have worked good for me and certainly not to be contrary, I sure didn't mind re-logging into the forum a few minutes ago. Two clicks, a moment and I was back in as my computer remembers my login. :)
It makes me uncomfortable that other sights that I enjoy will keep me logged in for days and days, by user-name. Handy? Yes but.
Admin, thank you for your work. This update works pretty dang good. :)

For people that can't stay logged in, i got tired of it so i switched to the "https://www.modeltfordclubofamerica.com" with the S in it, it stays logged in. Works for me, your mileage may vary.
