Under bed spare tire carrier

Post by Dallas Landers » Tue Jul 28, 2020 9:37 am

Im getting ready to make an under bed spare tire carrier for the 23 TT. I have two sizes. 32x4 1/2 rear and 30x3 1/2 front. The 8in1 bed is long enough for this. Just asking to see what others have come up with on their T pickup or TT. Im leaning toward a hinged front mount that swings down in the rear so Im not lifting both rims and tires to the ground for access. Any photos would be great. Thank you.

When I started working on my TT I found a spare tire and rim (30 X 3 1/2 which matched none of the other wheels, was flat and the rubber as hard as a rock) wedged up under the bed on top of the rear chassis cross member. I dunno if there's room on your truck to do this, but if there is you might consider putting the lighter front wheel spare up under the bed an rest the weight on the chassis cross member then put the heavier rear wheel spare on the hinged assembly you mentioned. In this manner you'd never need to lift the weight of both at the same time.

Anyhow, a thought.....

I very much dislike the idea of lying on my back in the mud to wrestle a heavy spare in or out, which is what's required by some under-bed spare carriers I've seen. I like the swing-down idea in Randy's photos, but I would put the hinges toward the rear so that when it's down the tire would be easy to reach. I would put a latch at the front end with a control rod to the rear. Pull the rod to undo the latch and let the carrier swing down. I imagine this would eliminate the aforementioned mud wrestling. But how about raising the carrier up to the latch with that heavy spare on it? Maybe a cable winding onto a shaft with a crank at the rear. I haven't tried this, but I think it would work if designed properly. Maybe it could be made to accommodate both a rear and a front spare.

Perhaps an AA spare tire carrier similar to the one above. I put one on one of my TTs a long time ago

Gave it a factory look and worked well, pain to use but I figured I would not use it often.

Ford offered a spare tire carrier for 26-7 pickups that bolted to the left side top mount and bolted to the running board. Yes it did block the drivers door but it certainly made the spare very handy. I have one for my project and could certainly take a picture if you are interested

This is the "side" mount on my Gramps' Express bed TT he bought new in Seattle - I've never seen another and it was made specific for the Express box - the body of the carrier matches the beading in the box sides ! It's only for a 32 x 4.5. - my Gramps had the front wheels & tires exchanged for "baloons" as soon as they became available - there are stories of him getting the 30 x 3.5 fronts stuck in the streetcar tracks around downtown Seattle !

I apologize for the small photo - it was taken years ago - I'll attempt to get a better photo if there's any interest.

You can blow up a small picture. Of course, that doesn't make it any sharper. :D

Something like Randy posted is what Im thinking. Will be made of flat and round stock. I dont have a place for a sidemount the way the bed is made. Thanks for all the input.

Dallas, I put the 30 x 3.5" spare tyre and rim for my shooting brake under the rear of the extended body. It is cradled in some rusted 1/2" rod framework, hinged at the front and pinned at the rear. With just one spare, it is still heavy to lift and hold while setting the holding pin.

I would be looking at some kind of winch to lift two spares. Two modern types come to mind. One Is from an 80's GM Holden ute, and utilises a cable on the winch drum. I thing a Toyota landcriuser traytop uses a chain instead of a cable. Both are cranked up from the ground using the same handle as the jack. Both simply wind up and jam the spare against the under side of the body, the weight of the spare being supported by the cable/chain. Replicating the basics from used chain, recycled angle iron and bracketry would be relatively simple. The pulley with recesses to accommodate the chain may have to be sourced from a breakers yard.

Hope this helps.

The weight is a factor. Maybe I need to think about a rack that the tires slide in from the side. The tail lights are in the way to the rear. Moving the lights outboard of bed runners may be an option also.

Dallas, can you reverse the brackets and make them swing outboard instead of inboard? Would that provide enuf room, and still keep the look?
