Suggestions on who to send my wheels to????????

Post by Lyndon » Tue Aug 04, 2020 12:58 pm

I have never had any wheels rebuilt and would like any suggestion you have to offer. I am wanting the best job possible. This would be for my 1914. Two 30 x 3 and two 30 x 3 1/2. I want show quality.

Thank you
Lyndon

I use Stutzman's in Baltic, OH. I just got one back from them today, and it's BEAUTIFUL!!! Cost is not cheap, but the quality is outstanding.

It cost $45.00 to ship my wheel, and I'm IN Wisconsin. BTW, where is Bloomfield? no state is given on your profile......

I've had excellent luck with Noah Stutsman, a true wheelwright.

I've posted a link to his website in Baltic, Ohio.

If you are closer to eastern Pennsylvania, Calimers is a great option. Seems like his shop and Stutzman always come up on these threads as having great reputations. Seems like shipping can be part of the decision process. My brother had a set done here for his 1923.

Shipping will be a big cost.
I used Steve Johnson in OK. Shipped him fellows and hubs, then would pickup finished wheels at Chickasha. Dan

Like everything else, everyone has an opinion. All the companies mentioned above are ok, but one stands out. That one is Calimers. Their wheels are absolutely the best. They are a little more expensive, but well worth it.

Guess what Dan ?... Steve Johnson hasn’t returned phone calls in years. I’ve had Round felloes reproduced there and he was top quality. I have a pickup bed of powder coated steel felloes needing spokes. We need a wheelwright in the South.
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people 🤪

For what it’s worth I used Johnson’s in Oklahoma for my 21 Touring wheels. Excellent quality plus extra nice crating for the wheels. Their packing and crating was over the top and that’s what was impressive.

George and anyone else, I’ve got a lathe and press your welcome to use, just bring your hickory and come on. This fall the temperature will be nicer. Bob @ 903-824-1949

Have to admit I have not seen Steve at Chickasha in a few years. But I am selling my self now, can not get time to pee much less walk a round. Hope all is well with him. All my dealings with him were first class.

For East of the Mississippi, Stutzman has the best turn around and qualify second to none.

My Curved Dash Olds came with a set of new wheels, made by one of the firms mentioned here. Even so, I had a second set made by Stutzman and those will be the ones I use.

Lyndon
I had my wheels done by Mr. Stutzman. First class and beautiful workmanship. Broke the wheels down and removed the spokes and wood felloe. Shipped the hubs ad rims to Mr. Stutzman and he called when they were ready for pickup. Drove down and picked them up. The walk through tour of his shop was worth the price of admission. Been around wood shops all my life, but his is really different. Lots of neat one off equipment and tools...all running on hydraulics' and no electricity. If you call him, he calls you back in a few days. Can't speak to the other wheelwrights mentioned, but I was most satisfied with his work, schedule and prices.

I've seen Johnson's wheels at Chickasha, and they are excellent. But he hasn't been there in recent years, and I heard that health problems put him out of the game. His website is still up, but the last time I tried to contact him I got no reply, so I don't know the status of that operation.

I've seen Calimer's wheels at Hershey, and they too are excellent.

My new wheels from Noah Stutzman were top quality. I sent him all the metal except the valve stem tubes, and he filled in the wood and supplied the tubes. One of the rims I sent him had a defect, and he phoned and had me send him a better one. I made the mistake of priming the metal parts. If I had more wheels made I would just prep the metal with phosphoric acid and use primerless paint.
The inevitable often happens.

You’ll need Clear(no knots) Northern, straight grained, kiln dried Hickory. Google ( hardwood Houston area) or what ever part of the world your in. Hardwood is generally sold in random widths and is straight lined on one side, widths will vary down the board. I buy eight quarter (two inch thick) by eight and one half Inch (at the narrowest) by 10ft. The blanks are cut one and 5/16 inches by one and 13/16 by ten and 1/16 long. The thickness of the board becomes the width of the spoke. Call if I can help.

I would like to thank everyone for their input. It looks likes Stutzman wins. I will give him a call. I want to build a show car. I have just received a new set of smooth white tires from Coker this week. Which has been ordered for right at a year. I thought it might take a long time to get a set of wheels fixed. I am wanting to get all the parts that might take while to get done first. So when the car gets close to being done, I would have everything ready to put together. I have plenty of driver cars, and I just wanted a nice show car for a change.
Thanks again
Lyndon

I just got a wood fellow wheel back from Stutzman's. It took about 5 to 6 weeks for it. Since you're doing a show car, tell Stutzman's if you plan to paint the entire wheel & spokes, or if you will do the spokes with a varnish finish. I think they will provide spokes with clear grain for varnish finish, and with some wood grain if they're to be painted.

I used Mr Stutzman in Ohio. Could not have asked for better work. He arranged to have them painted for me as well. When I unwrapped them I thought about hanging them on the wall as art. I have a 15 with wood fellows. I had mine redone for safety more than aesthetics and now they are both safe and beautiful.
