FIY:. Long time Model T guy , Charlie Shaver an occasional contributor to this forum was on his motorcycle about a mile from his house and a truck pulled out in front of him on August 6. His funeral was yesterday at the Daniel Funeral Home in Lamar, Mo. His interment is in Joplin at the Forest Park Cemetery. Sorry to report this but thought many would like to know. Allen Brintnall

Thanks for letting us know. Charlie's knowledge of old cars and trucks was phenomenal. He could not only name a vehicle but often had at least one around his place. He was certainly an Overland expert. I will miss him as will many on the Forum.
What a terrible thing to happen.

Oh no!

Although Charlie posted only occasionally, I considered him one of those "sage elders." I always listened quietly to what he said.

We will miss your wisdom, Charlie. Prayers for your family. Rest In peace.

Oh no! So sad. :(

Charlie was a great source of knowledge about Model T body wood and construction. He helped me get the correct wood and other parts for my 1925 Touring body. We talked several times on the phone. He asked me to come down to visit, but I never made it down there, unfortunately.

Charley was also an Overland and antique gas pump enthusiast.

Somewhere, either on my computer or on the old forum is a picture of Charley, if I can find it I will post it.

That's a shame. I spoke to him on the phone one time.

I love motorcycles, but will not ride them because of this very thing.

I had to lay down a two week old Harley 883 when I was in the military for this reason.

A few days ago, the guy who was considered the local expert on motorcycle safety was killed....same reason....driver pulled right out in front of him.

We'll miss his signature laugh on his posts.

Oh shoot. I never met him in person as far as I know. We exchanged a couple emails several years ago, and discussed cars and projects through forums many times. He knew so much about model T Fords, and so many other antique automobiles, trucks, and other related collectibles. I have seen photos of some of his gasoline pump collection, must have been one of the best such collections in the world. He took it upon himself to preserve and care for rare and unusual trucks that otherwise would have been scrapped long ago.
Gone too soon, I fear what will become of much of what he had saved.
One thing that should be said about our dear Charlie Shaver. He lived his life to the fullest! His way, and as a wonderful, caring, and very helpful way it was. Yes, he lived his life to the fullest. Right up to the very end of it.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. Charley was my friend. His knowledge of Model T's, Overlands, gas pumps, and all sorts of other old stuff was phenomenal, and he was very generous with it. He helped me a great deal when I was lost, trying to re-wood a Model T body. After visiting him and seeing what he had to show me, and listening to what he had to tell me, I was able to complete the project. This is a great loss to our Model T Community. My prayers of condolence go out to his wife and family. RIP, Old Buddy.

I am sad to hear this news.
Charlie was always ready to comment on the old truck thread on the OT forum. I think he looked forward to seeing a new photo when it was put there.
Charlie had his booth at Chickasha in the north east corner of the south building. Once I knew that was him sitting there I made a point to visit him.
Like so many have said before I too wanted to visit him. I was invited to stop in when I was in the area, the problem usually was I was on my way coming or going to Chickasha when I was in that area and he was not home but at the swap meet.
I was going to get some sheet metal he made for a gas pump some day.

God in Heaven! What a shock. Never knew him personally, but always got a kick, and usually "some learnin" from his posts.
Wow, can't believe it. And not to hijack his important remembrance here, but frankly I've found the last coupla years the highways out there in the T especially has become very risky and dangerous. So many rude, uncaring people, not paying attention, in a hurry, etc. I've had many a close call myself. RIP Charley. You will be missed by many.

I only knew Charlie from going to the Chickasha swap meet. Our spaces were close to his so in the evening after the crowds settled down I would always stop by and visit with him. I have been going to Chickasha for over 25 years and always remember Charlie being there till a couple years ago. He was one of the knowledgeable ones. I always meant to go by his home some day. We really did not live that far apart.

Our prayers and thoughts go out to his family.

Just hard to believe. Had plenty of phone calls with Charley over the years. He wanted to pass on his secrets for changing a later block to a 1909 10 open valve but was disappointed when he learned I was damn near as old he was!

How sad, such a loss to our T community.
I met at Chickasha years ago and was intrigued by his 1910 T in pieces. We discussed it several times and during the discussions I learnt about his skill of converting 1914 blocks into open valve replacements. He even let it slip how you can tell if it’s an original block or a fake. Who else could name a car from a fuzzy picture or portion of a fender? We’ll miss you Charlie. RIP

I can't express how sad this makes me feel. Charley was one of kind. Quit school in the 8th grade and never looked back. I've spent hours on the phone with him, having him help me with my 1910 and 1911 Overlands. What a loss, he was always happy to hear from me, and called me several times. Finally met him at Chickasha in '13, if memory serves me. Damn it!
