Why do I have pics I cannot upload
I click on attachments, and add file. The photo shows up, but there is a yellow triangle under status. It tells me that it does not know the dimensions of the file. Everything is good on the desktop and I can transmit the file with no problems. What is this software looking for? This is a frequent occurance. Thank you.

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
It sounds like perhaps some of your photos might be in a portrait view. If the photo is taken in portrait view you need to reorient the photo to landscape to upload it.

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
Let me try to drag and drop a portrait view pic - seems to have worked for me.
Maybe portrait only works if you drag and drop?

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
The few times I've received the dreaded yellow triangle it had to do with excessive image size. In those instances it took minimal resizing to post the picture.
This photo posts full size, as they usually do for me. I don't understand why a few of the same size are rejected as too big.
The scenery/portrait thing is new to me. I don't see anything about it here.

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
EVERY photo that I take with my cell phone, without exception, is way to big to down load, I, as a matter of routine, take the photo to "paint" and reduce it in size 50%, before trying to post on the Forum.

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
Picture size should not be a problem, the maximum size is over 20 MB and the system will resize both the thumbnail & the larger picture.
If you like you can email me the pics that don't load & I can experiment.

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
When I post vertical picture, portrait I believe, I get the dreaded triangle which indicates a limit of 1200 pixels high and 2400 pixels horizontally. So I have to reduce the picture so it’s less, then it works fine.
Chris I’ll send you the latest one to fail.

So portrait means vertical and scenery means horizontal? I've never heard of that before.

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
ChrisB, I have NEVER been able to post jpg photos from my phone or from my computer. That is regardless of file size. I get an error message which states that it is not possible to determine the dimensions of the image. I have to open the jpg in Paint and save it as a gif file. The gif error message says that the image must be, at most, 1600 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high. I resize to those values or less. Any photo that I can post is smaller than 900 kB. I don't post many photos because it's too much work. If the attached file results in an error, I have to edit it smaller. I can't save a file hat I've already attached to the post. I have to shut down the "Post Reply", resave the smaller file then start over. Repeat.

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
Mark, that sounds like your problem is the source of your pictures. Nearly all the pictures I post are jpegs, mostly full size. If you look at the screen shot I posted on Sunday you'll see that photo files from my camera are coded with file size, dimensions, and other info. Try posting jpegs from a different camera and see what happens.

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
Steve, I downloaded your picture and it is 553 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high. The 1200 appears to be the upper limit from my experience.
The terms portrait and scenery are usually referenced as to how the picture is presented. In your case it is clearly presented as a portrait even though we all know its scenery presented rotated 90 degrees.
The limits I have found on pictures used in this site cannot exceed 1200 pixels vertically and 2400 pixels horizontally.

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
Going up a really steep hill in a Model T! I would say it's a landscape on it's end. My computer software (windows 10) calls out landscape or portrait. Most portraits are done with the long sides vertical and landscape horizontal. Unless you are shooting in a square format (look at your old 35mm negatives), then all bets are off. When I was still shooting film with a 120 format, I could turn the camera so would take a wider shot when doing cars or landscape.Steve Jelf wrote: ↑Mon Sep 14, 2020 11:53 pmSo portrait means vertical and scenery means horizontal? Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
Mark, with all due respect, I think you meant to say 35mm you would turn the camera. 120 format is square pics, except in the unusual case of a Mamiya RB 67, which stood for "6x7" mm, it had a revolving back to switch from portrait to landscape format.

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
Picture that failed
Oh I can’t post it but here is the error message
In case you can’t see the small print, it reads:
The picture must be at least 0 pixels wide, and 0 pixels high and at most 1600 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high. The submitted picture is 1200 pixels wide and 1600 pixels high.
Comment
It was my understanding that this BBB site would sccept any size picture and resize to make it fit. It now appears the system does not always function correctly. Some large pictures are resized and other rejected. Of course there has to be a reason but it is beyond my capability to know what is the cause. Maybe the web masters can either find the cause or contact BBB to investigate.

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
I wonder if the posting problem has to do with phone cameras. Maybe some of them don't embed the data required by the website software. Pure speculation. I don't know.

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
Using a Windows 10 Laptop. I "copied" (not download) Jeff's photo directly into Paint and it appeared vertical and complete. I rotated it 90deg to the right & it chopped off part of the left side. I then rotated it back to the left 90deg and it appeared complete and vertical. I then selected the image and moved it to the right so there would be room for the vertical image to be rotated within the page. I rotated right and the rotation kept the entire photo. I then cropped off the surrounding white area and did not resize it. I then saved as jpeg and then attached that photo here and was surprised to see it smaller than the original
I then went back to paint and selected that saved image and resized it 200% and posted it below. The forum software appears to have adjusted the size of the image.
I then downloaded/saved the image and checked the pixel size was 600x277 same as the copied ones. When I opened it in Paint there was no extra white area and it rotated to the right without chopping off any of the image. So Paint behaves differently on how the image is introduced to it. When I attached it to this post the Forum software again adjusted the image In all 3 attempts the aspect ratio of the original image was maintained - just a bit smaller. So... It would appear that some manipulation of photos may be necessary for them to appear they way you want. The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
This is the picture I tried to post but here I reduced the pixel count to 720 high and 540 wide
This version is 1280 by 960
This is the original 4032 x 3024
Strange that the pixel count in the error message is different than the value given by my photo editor.

Re: Why do I have pics I cannot upload
The forum software has two parameters that is checks against uploaded images. If they exceed one of them you get the yellow triangle. One is the image size in bytes and the other is the image width in pixels. These values are set by the sites administrator.DHort wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 1:21 amI click on attachments, and add file.
