O.T. But interesting Shorpy Photo

Post by Roverdriver » Thu Feb 21, 2019 3:03 am

Interesting very early car in a photo on Shorpy- Link here-

https://www.shorpy.com/node/24362?size= ... al#caption

Beware- I have linked to the enlarged version of the picture as the car area is rather small.

Enough to make you cry, big, tree shaded front yards, big wrap around porches (with chairs), no fences, folks in their Bib and Tucker, where did it all go? Enlarge the picture and one can see another Lady walking a little girl. I can just see the neighbors interacting and visiting one another, truly another time and place.

Well said Grady. Also, no doubt these people are very much "of substance". Looks like some kind of tropical "bush" in front of the porch, so I wonder if it's down in Florida....gorgeous car, great pic BTW. Thanks Herb for posting it.

The man at the porch and the woman on the porch. But the first thing I noticed was the horse hitched up to a wagon of some sort..The time of transformation from horse to automobile... must have been a wonderful time...

I was going to say that most of you must be seeing things and then was going so say something like what about the airplane, or something like that to be part of the conversation lol. Then I decided to go to the shorpy site and there it all was. It is a great photo, thanks Herb. Anyone know what car? Tiller early CDO, REO ? Looks to be pre 05 , Rich could probably chime in.

It’s not a CDO, the front is wrong and the tiller on the CDO runs at an angle to the front of the car.
I’m not an expert on other very early cars but a Northern I recently saw had many of those features.
Certainly a well to do family, certainly not average. Things were good for those with money, no income tax, but not so good for those less well off.

This is the third model of this car. In 1901 they made a few proto types, two speed planetary with no reverse! It bolted directly on the rear end. In 1902 they made a couple hundred cars. At that time reverse was an option.. the first two years they used a Dedion Bouton 1cly engine, top speed was 20 mph. These engines we're way ahead of there time with a counter balanced crankshaft. In 1903 Pierce reverse engineered that engine, and cast Pierce in the side of the crank case. Stealing ideas was going on even then! I actually have two of the earliest model I'm working on now. Lots of machining on new bushings and bearings.
I'm having fun though 😊
Have a great day. Mike

Some things were better then. Architectural styles and musical tastes come to mind. Other aspects of life not so much. Think public health, infant mortality, Jim Crow, child labor, etc. I'd love to go back to 1900 for a visit, but I probably wouldn't want to stay there.

I'd love to go too ! I think the average life expectancy in 1900 for a male in America was about 46 years. It jumped with the introduction of antibiotics. I think I'd take some with me if I made the visit. LOL
Yes, life was hard back then, but simple and uncomplicated. A text was the telegraph, and the phone had a crank handle. Two long rings and one short. I remember my grandmother telling me that was their ring code circa 1910.

This idea is forever on my mind. Go back, stash stuff in places I know to survive,
and save so much that just wasn't. Take a suitcase full of cash and buy all the right
stuff. The C&S narrow gauge scrapped dozens of mothballed 1880's locomotives for
lack of buyers. The possibilites are endless ! Reality keeps getting in the way of my
fantasy life. 👎🏿

Take a suitcase full of cash...

That suitcase will cost you a bundle. Depending on condition, $1 bills sell for $150 to $1000+. :)

Nice write-up in the "Cycle and Automobile Trade Journal", for April 1, 1903, on the Pierce Stanhope and Pierce "Arrow".
They were covering the New York Show, of January 1903. The Pierce Arrow, the tonneau, a much larger 15 H.P. car.

https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id= ... 1up;seq=72

"The Stanhope is equipped with a 6-1/2 H.P. motor of the De Dion type."

A little slippery maybe, but they at least said it!

Mr. Jelf,

I am the sole agent of my own fantasies, thank you ! I do not come poking around your
fantasies, and I would appreciate the same from others !
