23 t rear axel rebuild

Post by Rich Huggins » Fri Oct 02, 2020 10:09 pm

Looking for axel drive gears ! The right side gear in the differential bad and the right top diff cover grooved also, can not get axel out of ring gear diff housing used a plastic hammer on it and my brass hammer did not come out ,the axel rotates but when you hit it it dose not rotate, hit with care. Axel keepers are removed so i cant tell if there is damage to the drive gear or the ring gear. Diff did have babbitt bearings worn on right side, Axel and the wheel would move in and out on the right side , driver side is fine no play no noise from the rear axel! the drive gear #2520 b

1 Are you using the MTFCA Axle book?
2 The 2520 differential gears are usually OK, but if you need one try Bob's.
I'm not sure I understand the rest. Maybe pictures would help.

Bob rebuilds the differential halves. He probably also has all the other parts you need to replace.

It appears that none of the parts in your photos is reusable. If the axles were loose in the differential gears it's probable that the axles may be no good either. It should take a lot of force to get the gears off of the axle shafts.

If you decide to buy new axle shafts from Chaffin's, ask them if they have a good set of side gears that they can press onto the new shafts for you before they ship them to you. Saves you the hassle of pressing them on yourself. :)
