Ok, so if you put the vane on the shed, you look out and see it. If you put it on the house roof only the neighbours know which way the wind is blowing. My wife had always wanted one, and always said that there was no point in getting one until we had a separate garage. We moved and the weather vane went on the garage within the week.

Lightning Rod

It also makes a good lightning rod. Be sure You have lightning grade braded ground cable going from wind vane to a ground rod. Especially if You placing it on a roof out in the open.
