Little snow in Montana

Post by StanHowe » Tue Feb 26, 2019 12:40 am

Haven't been able to get in to the south side of the ranch for a month or so, drove out yesterday and checked to see what is going on. Nothing but some Elk coming down to drink in the creek. No cows anymore, sold them a dozen years ago, barely a Coyote track in the snow this year and the Deer ate all the standing Alfalfa last fall and moved to somebody else's hayfield so not even much for Deer tracks. Spent the day trying to help the elderly in my neighborhood and had one come to check on their elderly neighbor -- me -- so I took her to the grocery store and bank since she's been snowed in for a few days too.

Just came in from the shop.

Looks good Stan!
? The wind blew all your snow away?
A friend told me my backyard snow was in his driveway yesterday. He's 50 miles east. He's prob'ly right. I had deer turds on a pedestal of snow yesterday with an inch and a half of snow missing underneath.
Beautiful photos!

We don’t have a “south forty” in our property here in Rochester but all of us here in New York State are pretty tired of winter. This is the most difficult tome of year when you know spring will come .. but it never comes soon enough. I start the T in my unheated garage once a week and get it up to operating temp to keep it’s mucles from atrophy. Itchin for a long drive.

Hi Stan

we're socked in but good, too. Not even going to try to get out. We have an irrigation ditch through our property and a really good climb off of the bridge to my main road. I'm weighing the chances of the Jeep pulling through the snow successfully against the chances that I will just tear up my road, strand my jeep and block my only exit. Looks like typing on the computer won out. Stay warm!

I used to love there snow when i was a kid but now not so much. We hit low 60's yesterday here in S/W Missouri !!!!!!
Years ago I had a 28 Essex coupe that I couldn't find tires for 4.50-5.50 x 20. I got 6.00 x 20 truck tires from my
father's oil truck and they fit on the split rims. No getting stuck in the snow after that. It raised the car six inches
or so and with those wide tires ,it really went through snow.

Three and a half feet of the stuff in the yard. Drifts against the fence reach the
top. It is an 8' fence. Mark nailed my sentiments. I enjoy winter in December
- when we usually get most of our snow - but by the time February rolls around,
the old brain says "Enough of this nonsense, let's get on with it !" and my impatience
grows for budding trees and flowers and the smells that come with spring.

Anaconda got the most snow this week since they started keeping records, they have hauled over 1000 dump truck loads so far according to the news.
We are expecting another foot today and tomorrow, -30 temps by Sunday.
Governor lifted all hour restrictions on drivers ; propane and fuel mostly.
Some snow plow drivers are pretty exhausted I'll bet. They are plowing 24/7 on some passes.
There were 315 wrecks in one 24 hour period this week and that doesn't include slide offs.
Three snowplows smacked in one day on highways across the state.

I should have bought that Kubota loader tractor a month ago, found somebody to run it and could have paid a bunch of it off by now.

I spent yesterday at the Dr, then ferrying the neighbor lady whose car is snowbound in her driveway to the store and back, jump-started a couple rigs for people and pulled a couple out of snowbanks, locked my keys in my pickup and had to call the locksmith to come unlock it -$90 - then drove over Mac pass in four wheel drive to Deer Lodge to watch the boys challenge game at 4 - they lost by one point - got home at 9 and worked in the shop for a couple hours while the house warmed up etc and got a pissy email this morning about a carburetor not being done.
So it goes in rural north America.
Off to the shop, it's after 9 am, I'm late, late, late.
It's snowing.
The shop will be warm. Took $375 in gas + 100 in wood and some in electric to keep it that way from Jan 20 to Feb 20.
Doing everything I can.

Stan

It is my uneducated guess that the origin of that email was likely from a large metropolise, similar to the one I recently escaped from. Having lived that life, I am in a good position to understand and be thankful for the circumstances I am in now. I'll bet you feel similarly and can't help but be thankful you're not living their life.

Stay warm my friend, I am about to try to get to town on this warm 25F day before your cold becomes my cold. We'll see how much snow this old Jeep can ford before I get to the main road. I'm wearing extra warm socks incase I have miscalculated ;)

One of the problems with doing business on the internet is that many people have no concept of the fact that these businesses are run by old men in marginal facilities with little or no help.
Young people and people retired from the corporate world in the city assume I have a big shop with a staff, an office with secretaries, full time shipping department s and can answer ever phone call, email or request for advice. Some assume we are like Amazon, 24/7/365.
This is a one geezer operation. Some days I have to deal with life. Some days I go do things that are important to me, like taking a day to go pull Raeanne's pickup out of the ditch, get her tires fixed, dry her tears, take her to dinner and convince her she needs to stay in college not matter how things are going.
So I didn't work on a carburetor that day.
I know I should have been working and I'm sorry I didn't answer the email right away. But not much.

Hey Stan, the plow drivers could work 1/2 as long if they only hauled in 500 loads of snow! Ha Ha Ha, I crack me up.
Hey carbs are very important, but not as important as enjoying your own time and doing things you need to. I have my own business and am working building a house where there is no phone service. The txt and voice mails I get because I dont answer are unbelievable. It took me a while but realised I can only get so much done and dont worry about it any longer. It does afford me the ability to be choosey about the jobs I take on. I stay booked 6 months or more out so I cant complain. If they cant wait, they get someone else. Enjoy your life and work when you have time Stan.

The namby-pamby's here are getting a taste of a REAL Minnesota winter here too.
The pics shown here are fantastic! I love winter and snow. But I'm even getting a bit tired of it...
We do what we need to do in the winter. My knees have been saying it's going to snow again. :)
Even if my wife would like me to (I won't), I am NOT going to send a pissy (or otherwise) email asking about a carb!
Carry on Stan! Just like we all do. :)
Crunch crunch crunch in the snow we go. Perfect.
Since I lost my mind mind, I feel more liberated

No snow here, just frozen ground. Our normal high for this time of year is 40. It has topped 30 a few times latley but next week its going to be a high in the low teens and sub zero wind. Come on its March ! Oh well, It will be too hot this summer!

If the precip we've been getting the last couple of weeks had been snow instead of the rain we got, we'd be hip deep in it too. As it is, rain and sudden melt is making for minor flooding around the county. The ground's still frozen. Wet is tougher on the livestock than cold and of course we're wading in mud. I've "strawed" the corral three times the last month. There's still a three foot drift blocking the door to the model T garage though. I love "weather" !! If a guy doesn't have enough grief in his life, there's always the weather to complain about !

Rich

your rain turned into 8 more inches of white stuff for us. We normally get around 10 inches all winter and right now I have about 30 on the ground. Even the old timers are shaking their heads. Our little bit of heaven is the historic wintering grounds for several Plains Indian tribes due to the predictable low snowfall and availability of grass and bison. This year is one for the records. We typically will have 3 inches on the ground, drive to Billings and they will be shoveling 3 feet. We're in a basin that is always 10 degrees warmer than surounding area in summer and about 8 degrees colder in winter...and very dry.

Most things like snow I see as a simple test of the mental capacity of others.
One quickly discovers who the idiots are, be that by natural lack of intelligence
or self-imposed limitations to think of anything but deadlines, image, etc. Most
times the latter.

When "stuff" happens, life slows down. Bad stuff happens to those who try
to overrule nature with their own ideas of how the world should revolve around
them. They are ALWAYS the ones I am pulling out of ditches or taking stupid
phone calls from.

No snow here in the southland yet but we have rain, 5.5 " last Saturday, 13.5 for the month. TVA is spilling 3.5 Trillion gallons a second from the dams , this is water held to reduce flooding on the Ohio and Mississippi, they are forecasting another 1-2" this weekend.

JOHN!!!!!!!! SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!

MOVE TO MONTANA, THEY SAID, IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL THERE IN THE WINTER TIME!!!!!! SUMMER IS NICE BUT WINTER IS WHEN IT IS REALLY PRETTY, SOMETIMES THEY EVEN GET SNOW!!!

Steve, I moved here in 72 and couldn't believe how much snow Helena got. I was going to leave in the spring or when I could save up enough money to go somewhere else.

Then it was June and I couldn't leave. And I never could save enough money. I always had to pay the heat bills from the winter.

When you see her again, tell your sister Howdy from me. I met her a few times with the Lieutenant Governor and thought she was very nice.
