It’s not officially Spring until the manatee sees it’s shadow...

Since Manatee's have very poor eyesight, can they ever see their shadow?

Daffodils always come out early, like these in mid-January, and they usually get a rude surprise.

Not any plant activity here in southern Michigan but the bird activity has really increased. I heard a red wing blackbird singing yesterday which is my harbinger of spring coming!

After two or three days of 21 F, I am afraid the Peach Crop for this year is gone, lots of orchards were in full bloom and some leafing out, unusual for us. All the Wife's flowers took a dive, and my Fig tree as well. My stock tank froze over twice this week, also a bit unusual. I'm going to start my T today, let it idle for awhile, at least I can sit and hear it run.

Spring must be here. The sun came up an hour late today! The whistle pigs are out and about. No green here just mud with mud on top of more mud. 65 late week will help the little bit of frost in the ground leave and it will dry up.

40° in the Thumb of Michigan today....the driveway is muddy and the ditches full of water runoff. I did see a Robin today...when the Redwing Blackbirds return we know spring isn't far off. Maybe Thursday when it should hit 60°! I can't wait!!!

The snow drifts are still 5-6 feet deep against the fences and buildings, but there are bare
spots on the ground here and there. All but main arterial roads are a bugger of 5-10" ice
flows and bare spots, making for a non-stop thrash on frozen speed bumps. Slows me way
down, but idiots still drive like, ... well, idiots ! ... and we are still getting lots of crashes.
Was up on another roof today, breaking up ice dams. But it was sunny and warm ... everything
feels warm after the down-around-zero stretch each year ! The ground is all squishy from
the thaw, and the ice/snow will take a while to completely go away, but it feels like we have
made a sudden turn

The best part is the lows are high enough that the shop stove can beat the cold back enough
to get some work done. This makes me happy.
More people are doing it today than ever before !

Very nice out as I tried to fix too many different things on the motor grader all of a sudden yesterday afternoon/evening. One muffler even decided to lay down on the hood today. Good grief, I'm not dreaming this nightmare.

Spring here in the MO. River bottoms in NW. MO. has been and will most likely be a struggle for more than a few months, to put it lightly. MAJOR flooding has been and is going on with all time record high river readings at Rulo NE., which is just across the river from our area. This is going on all the way into all of the MO. River basin, both North and South. Thousands and thousands of acres of farm lands, crops, livestock, homes, towns, cities and livelyhoods have been and will be affected for years. This has partly been going on as a result of the "Bomb Cyclone" that went through the northern midwest states awhile back and recent rains and snow melt in the basin. The snow pack in the mountains is still coming. Look it up on Google, it ain't pretty. Fortunately, we are out of the flood plain on a hill in our small town of about 1200 people, but the whole community is affected as are all of the ones up and down the area as we rely mostly on local revenue. Flood relief supplies have been coming in from all over he country, both for people and livestock. The support has been amazing. Dave

I've seen the disaster from the flooding, Dave
Heart felt prayers to all those affected.
I suppose we will all be affected at the grocery store this summer.
I heard several stories of horses and livestock drowning also, very sad.

It's spring in Minnesota now because yesterday I saw my first Mosquito. I had just gotten done spraying the last coat of clear on a Dodge truck hood and there it sat, right in the middle of the hood. Monday I will have to sand and buff it out. I guess there is a bright side to -30 degrees below zero.

Dave, the worst bug around here is the Asian Beetle bug, looks just like a Lady Bug. They will land in fresh paint and walk all the way across the freshly painted hood and still crawl off and get away. They only show up in the fall of the year.

After the latest snow, here's how I see it. If you look far beyond and see the band of blue on this side of the ice, that's OPEN water.
Spring has come here too.

The last couple of days appeared to be the peak of redbud season, so before I went to town for groceries yesterday I shot a picture with one of them as a backdrop.
The inevitable often happens.

Thanks for the welcomes above. Have not visited this thread in a while. We had
the strangest winter this year. Minimal snow all winter and then it really came at
the end. It took two weeks for the snow to melt away in the shady areas, but it has
been gone now for a couple weeks. My trees and brush are budding up nicely. A few
are already leafing out. I was able to get all my pruning done before anything began
to bud. Began turning the gardens yesterday. The serviceberry and syringa will be
in bloom soon. The late wet and sudden warm is making all the plants very happy.
More people are doing it today than ever before !

Yesterday was beautiful, 79 and partly cloudy !!
Got 90% of the sticks and branches picked up and burned. :)

Rain moved in and cool today. As soon as I get a dry spell, I need to start the "mowing every 4 days" process...should have lots of pretty yellow flowers soon also.
Grass is sure green and leaves are popping out.

That was 10-15 years ago !!!
My dog was laying by the fire a little later, but I didn't get a picture. We thought about making some 's'mores but were too tired to get the fixins from the house...
Maybe next time, or break out the pie irons. :)

Spring is here! Horses are happy to have green grass. The black colt is my neighbors. He is a pal for mine. He lost his long time pal years ago, so now he gets a new colt about every year to teack respect. Kaiser is 34 years old as of April 12th. He has been retired from riding for about 8 years. Everyone should have a 1000 lb pet.
