The “w” hubcap saga

Post by Mark Osterman » Wed Jan 09, 2019 10:04 pm

For those of you who followed this saga. Well, I paid $60 for the w marked hubcap on ebay. It arrived today and it was very nice though the seller sent it in a soft padded envelope! Yes, it arrived bent! Luckily not enough that pressing it between a wool blanket couldn’t coax it back to shape.

Drat! The seller deserves a serious negative rating.

To mail a thin metal (cup-like) cap in an envelope is worst than being careless. More like spite IMO

I would ask for refund as his reluctant to use protective packing on a $60 item resulted in worthless to you purchase,

It was only slightly “pressed” and it looks perfect now. Just pissed me off given the cost and fragility of the piece.

I wonder if the seller knows the meaning of common sense?

You can't assume anything when buying from somebody. You have to communicate such things as proper packing.

Is the hubcap brass or steel? I didn’t say anything on the other thread, but am thinking the “W” marked hubcaps were the plated steel repros that were made in Wisconsin 40-50 years ago...

While that might be true, my 25 has at least one steel "W" cap that lost it plating and was painted gold to look like brass and in my OP was older then that. There have been a number of them in not so good shape on Ebay that that looked to be T era. The current TT truck repo's are stamped with a "W" that we got from Snyder's.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

I haven’t checked the base material of the cap but it does match the others I have on the car. When I first bought the ‘23 all of the caps were toast. I found a near perfect set of these w marked cap at Hershey for $25 and out them in the car. Then I mangled one in backing up in a parking lot ... one of those low concrete filled pipes. So now I complete again. No complaints. They could be repros from the 1950s but I’ll keep them on for driving while I look for a vintage set that’s solid.

Most later caps are brass, nickel plated,.... but have a few that are steel and nickel plated.

Two above are 'W" marked, nickel over brass. The "U" mark is old nickel over steel, note the magnet attracted to the steel one, the brass caps are unaffected :P

The "W" cap I posted on the old classifieds is brass. I guess I should post again. I shipped the 1915 cap I recently sold inside a cardboard tube (padded nicely)

About Bob McDaniel's post from Jan 5th., that hubcap that has a starting bid of $19.99 has been relisted with about 2hrs. left this time. It states in the auction a price of $25.90 for economy and it is located in Australia.

I've got quite a collection of NOS hubcaps from Hershey. For years, I was buying them for about $10. Why buy a repro?
The ones that are getting hard to find now are real 1913 hubcaps, which are considerably different from '14-16 caps, and even later with nickel plating.
