What have you done with your Model T in April?
I'll start it off this month. This isn't a specific car, but any Model T engine/transmission I need to haul in my Suburban. With limited overhead room I can't reach in with a hoist, and I've been using a wooden stand I have to slide in and out. Putting it mildly, that is no fun. So I made a stand that sits low enough to fit and will roll in and out.
Turning the handles forward puts the casters down so the stand will roll.
Turning the handles back lowers the stand to rest on the floor.

Pulled the wheels off the 09 and replaced one rear wheel that was racked and not safe. Looks like the darn thing would be under warranty but the local Ford dealer is out of them. Glad I had a good spare. Getting it ready for summer!

I guess you could call it that. It was one of those things where you start building and make it up as you go. Mostly scrap on hand. I may have as much as $25 in it.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
Sorry to say I pulled the Chevrolet over head conversion off my T. Not disappointed with the results, just don't have room or money to keep experimenting with it right now. It ran fine but with the carb setup I was using was slow. I will have the whole shebang at the Portland (Oregon) swap meet (EXPO center) this weekend.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

While not my car, Mark and Phil Eyre are making steady progress on their '11 Torpedo project. They have the chassis and engine pretty well licked and the body is now blue. The long process of pin striping began today.

Just bought this one and brought it home. It was sitting in a home garage near me for 30 years. Needs a good cleanup and then we will try to get it to run. Should be fun!

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
Shouldn't I have a valve on my carburetor to shut off the gas? No. It looks modern, and/or it's so stiff you practically have to use a wrench to turn it. After seeing a setup like this on a TT a few years ago, I made one for my 1915 runabout, and I just made another for my 1923 touring and installed it this morning. You can turn the sediment bulb valve from beside the car. No need to crawl underneath.
Two running board bolts hold a length of angle iron, which holds a rod attached to the sediment bulb valve. When the handle is down...
...the valve is closed. A short piece of tubing swivels on the end of the rod, fits over the valve handle, and is held on by a small hose clamp.
When the handle is turned up...
...the valve is open.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
I like it Steve, but with bumps and travel might the handle work its way down and shut the gas off? Needs some sort of say zip tie loop to go around the end of the handle and keep it from sagging down and thus closing the gas?

This one seems stiff enough to stay put. But if it doesn't I'll add a spring catch like I did on the runabout.

I washed my car...isn't much I know, tomorrow I'm going to dismantle my Rockies and replace some washers with smaller ones, to see it that makes any difference in their performance.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
Currently, I'm slowly disassembling the Roadster seat assembly I bought at last January's Turlock Swap Meet. I believe the body section had been all original with remnants of original upholstery. It's really been a learning experience for me because I'm learning details of 1920 Roadster construction I didn't know before. This seat assembly appears to be from the time just after the switch to the oval gas tank and so the wood structure is different than what's shown on the Mel Miller drawings I'm using to reconstruct my car. The tool tray behind the tank is narrower to allow space for the wider oval tank. I'll have to convert my current pieced together body from round tank to oval tank to make it more appropriately like the 1921 which it should be. I also learned that the wooden strip going around the top edge of the seat is actually three sections reinforced with a sheet metal covering (3 sections of sheet metal reinforcement) along the back. I thought it was suppose to be a continuous steam bent 3/4 inch wood molding to nail upholstery to. It makes sense to have the sheet metal reinforcement because of the strain of the driver and passenger leaning back against the seat would need more resistance than just the 3/4 inch wood strip. Also I didn't know about the cardstock the factory used on the arm rest areas to smooth out the transitional step up caused by the use of the metal end caps. Great Model T construction fun and lots of tedious work ahead for me this April. Also this month I'm waiting on Lang's for my back ordered piston rings. I sent my engine out for machine work in February and am held up waiting for rings to come in.

On my 24 touring I found, if I lift the passenger side of the floorboard up, I can easily reach the fuel shutoff.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
By this way I want to encourage Jugster.
I was there nine years ago but one level more, I was 54 .
It took me about 6 months to take up about a normal live again.
The job I did, heavy mechanic on harvest machines, I had to leave and went to the electronic of these machines.
I am a scuba diver on the holydays and doing this since 1974 and still doing it. I just adapt the way to do it.
Pain will never go away but it is different, and you can live with it. Nerve pain is gone only muscle stays. I don't take pain killers, only heat, stay on the move and twice a week back exercises for one hour.
At this time my only problem is COLD on my back. When the bolts get cold all your spine get cold and that give pain I can't stand. The only way for me to get rid of it is a HOT bath.
Whatever you do, LISTEN to your body !!!!!! Don't over take it but stay on the move.
Andre

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
I hope I don't come off seeming insensitive to Jugster's health situation with my posting following up after Andre's comments. Part of my motivation to get my Roadster moving along in it's re-construction is that I was recovering from an illness from late last year and as like many others on the forum I'm not getting any younger myself, but to respond to Steve's comment that there're other vendors for me to get my piston rings from, I wanted to say that Lang's was not my first choice because of their distance from California. Back in February I ordered pistons and rings from Snyder's Antique Auto Parts. They weren't able to give me a clear idea of when I could expect the rings in on a back order so, given the positive reputation of Lang's on this forum, I decided to cancel my ring order from Snyders and go with Lang's. The other vendors I checked out had websites that were not clear to me which ring sets they were offering because there are a variety of piston ring types and sizes out there covering the cast iron pistons, high domed aluminum and the non domed aluminum ones like the pistons I actually received from Snyder's. Given Lang's reputation and their extensive offering of in depth Model T parts I felt it was worth a try even though in February at the time of my ring order with them I had a magneto coil assembly on back order with them since December. At one point Lang's reassured me that it was only going to be another week, then more weeks passed. I'm at the point of rationalizing the benefits of not having my engine under foot while I'm disassembling and re-doing the bodywork on my Roadster. I spoke to a club mate of mine at the last MTFCA chapter meeting I attended in Santa Clara and he said he had had a similar back order experience with Lang's and he felt that Lang's isn't as it use to be, suggesting better past experiences. I continued to wait. Then last week my magneto coils assembly arrived and so I'm hoping maybe the rings'll make it in soon too. Lang's does have terrific telephone customer service and was sympathetic when I spoke with them a few days ago.
So Steve, that's my story for why I'm not looking to another vendor.
Just to be clear I don't mean to sound like there's anything unusually wrong with either Snyder's Antique s or Lang's. I appreciate what they offer to the Model T hobby in terms of access to replacement parts. I'm certain any of the other vendors could likewise experience delays from their suppliers too.

Lubed the hand brake and cross shaft.
Greased the u-joint and tube.
Drove to the gas station and put $20 in the tank.
Came home and talked my wife into a ride. We went through a small neighborhood nearby with a few new and a few refurbished homes. Lots of trees to help block the wind that made it a little chilly. She commented on how smooth the car is running !!

Eric is correct on the 11 torpedo in the above post it has been apart since 1987. We took it apart to store it when I was 17. Next year I’ll be 50 and it was time to get it done. Life certainly gets in the way of the hobby sometimes. I’m not too computer savvy so Eric has been posting pictures as I get things done. Our hope is to have it completed for next year. It’s a closed valve twelve river rear end car. It was a pretty complete car and we did purchase repo fender and hood on it. I wish now I would have fixed the originals.

Got my locking steering wheel off and lubed the gears. I think by tightening the spider screws, the pesky rattle should be gone !!
I also fixed the wire end for my dash light, and it works !

Changed the E&J 1915 sidelights to correct 1913 sidelights and then converted the 13's to LED lights.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
The 13 Modern Speedster had turn signals installed when I got it, however the switch was below the dash in front of the passenger - very unhandy and also dangerous. I have now moved it to the seat riser under the seat and to the right of the driver a skosh, now it's easily activated with my right hand and I don't have to get all contorted as before.

Here is more work on the Eyre Torpedo. All four fenders are on it and the process of buffing out the paint is well underway.

Rebuilt two wheels. Spokes are finished with boiled linseed oil and turpentine. Just have to finish painting the iron components.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
I started early this morning doing my annual maintenance. Cleaned the timer, oil change, greased all the cups, etc. I finished up early afternoon and was able to finally get out for a little drive around town. I've been chomping at the bit to get out this year, but the weather hasn't been cooperative until this weekend.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
One step forward, two steps back. Been working on the 09 the last couple days to get ready to drive it all weekend. Got the toe in set and packed the front wheel bearings, removed the worthless oil sight gage from the side of the pan which stopped an oil leak from the vent hole in the top of it. You can not see the oil in the window under a dark car with dark oil and a black oil pan anyway. Fixed a few small items and reset the coils on the HCCT my wife found for me and then set up the spare coils that came with the car. Most were marked .8 amps 2013 but only 1 was still at .8 and the rest were all over the place and a couple were 1.3 and 1.4. I set them all at .8 and now the car idles all the way down and is smoother. After all this I noticed fewer free starts and thought maybe I need to play with the coils more but after a long day of driving we stopped for drinks and when I shut it off the switch felt loose and then would not work. After pulling it apart in the parking lot I found all the screws were loose inside and the switch had come apart inside. I fixed that and we decided to head for home but stopped by the house of someone my wife works with to give him a ride. The car was now starting much better and free starts were back so we felt it was ready to drive till I made a sudden stop for a light and found out the brakes worked better than most T's I have driven. Then the problems came. At the next light I hit the brakes and nothing happened! Lucky for me I had fixed the rear brakes the other day when I replaced the bad wheel and found a spring had come off after someone put lined brake shoes on the car so I pulled the leaver and stopped just over the white line with my front wheels. I was able to take him home with just the rear brakes but when I got home and pulled the cover to see what happened I noticed the Kevlar bands I was told the car had were cotton! Looks like I will be putting new Kevlar bands in before we can drive it again. Glad I found this before the tour in June. We put around 50 miles on the car and it would have been a long walk. Shake down runs are so much fun!
Give an old car guy a barn and he won't throw anything away.

I crossed the Blue Mountains in my 26 Tourer with the usual suspects.
260km round trip for me. It seemed to run ok although compression is currently 28, 32, 39, 32 psi.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
Went to paint the hubs their final coat of paint.
Front hub, both halves, must have had some type of contamination on them. Blistered almost immediately. Now I get to strip it, and start over. Funny thing, the rear hub, was done at the same time, sat right next to it during, and no issues with it. Both used the same paint, primer, handled exactly the same. Oh well, a little more work.

I'm nearing the end of my struggles gapping my magneto magnets. Every time I mounted the flywheel my dial indicator showed a horrible .013" wobble on the non magnet side, so I pulled it apart and checked everything. All good. I finally mounted the flywheel on a mandrel in the lathe and discovered that Henry could care less about running true on the BACK side where I was measuring when it was on the engine! The face with the magnets runs within .003" or so. Good enough......I'm tired!

The hood slipped right on the Eyre Torpedo. It's only two inches longer than standard but it looks lick much more than that. And oh what a wonderful optical illusion it is!

All I didn’t this month was chip all of the ice away from my garage door and go for a short drive to see what needed to be addressed/adjusted. The short answer seems to be ‘everything.’

Now that mud season is well under way here in Vermont, it time to put some water in the radiator, fix the driver's cushion, and put some air in the tires. If doesn't rain Sunday afternoon my daughter and I are off to the local sugar house for some sugar on snow.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
I finished something today! A couple of somethings, in fact. Accessories to enhance the driving experience.
The first project was a pair of extensions that will allow me to back up without getting my big feet tangled in the pedals. Nobody will ever accuse me of being a skilled welder, but I don't think these will come apart.
This one is for the touring and the other will go in the runabout. I could have bought prettier ones for $60+, but these are from scraps and materials on hand for no cash expenditure.
The other improvement is this mirror for the touring. The cash spent on this was $2 for a new mirror, as the old one was pretty bad.
I found the original mounting hardware in my parts room, but there was no clamp to hold it on the window frame. So I made one from a piece of 1" conduit.
This should keep me informed if anybody is sneaking up on me from behind.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
Found a fair to middling tire that will do for short trips. Not much tread, but not as cracked. The right rear, I discovered, has a split started by the bead, about 3" long !! Looking at some takeoffs Tuesday that hopefully will get me through the summer.
Went for a little spin and put a coat of wax on to get the water spots off.
Bill, another local T nut, stopped by with his 24 RPU. Beautiful car, he couldn't say enough about Joe Bell doing his engine, sounded great.
Like a moron, I didn't take a picture

Welded (dropped metal balls) six small pieces to the right A-pillar which is the final body piece that rests on the sub-frame. It's only been several years to get to this point, working off photos without dimensions. Finally, was able to test fit the front and back body halves of the coupe together to see what needs to be fixed. Can't replace the skin yet as it would get in the way of welding things in place. I learned that there was no way for Ford to assemble (rivet) the body frame to the sub-frame at the factory with the skin in place on the improved models. I dunno, maybe he did anyway.

My wife goes to a quilting romp with her Missouri girl friends every year in April.
This year I hauled my 25 pickup back and my friend Wayne Ringgenberg helped me put the seat back upholstery and top on.
He knowing what he was doing as opposed to me did most of the work.
We only had three days to complete the job and we are both over 80 years of age so I came home with some minor unskilled jobs left

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
I'm kind of ashamed to admit it, but after letting my car sit for too many years because the issues seemed (at the time) overwhelming, I got off my butt and got her running again. She still has bearing issues, but she runs. Someone a year ago said they had a '15 motor that was fresh and new... that they'd be willing to sell, but we lost touch (darn!!!).
So that's what I've done... so far. Still need to get the mains and rods done, maybe do a whole KRW on her, but for now... she runs.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
I finished my 14 coil box good enough that I can put it back on. I need to finish the top and get the latches plated, I was thinking about getting a Caswell kit because the bolts that hold it on, I know what they look like and can make some but I think they should be brass plated too along with other odds and ends. My 14 box was stressed and rusted and the corners split. I bent a piece of round rod and welded in the corners in the bead for strength then filed them flat. I clamped aluminum angle inside and welded up the corners and patched a couple holes. I’ve had the box from my 21 on my 14 so I put it back today. Haven’t started it in 6 or 8 months but it started right up.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
Went to Bill's and got a couple pics of his 2 Ts.
From there to a lady close by and got a couple decent used Firestones, a USA tube and a Ruckstell shifter.
Ordered a couple new tubes, but found another USA tube in my old tire and took a chance...holding so far !! Tomorrow I may try the other tube, I have a bare rim.
The old tire was a little unnerving !

Dave ! You mean you had to go to someones garage to find T parts?
Looking at their cars and searching their spare parts for what you need is1/2 the fun.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
The Bendix cover screws were shot like everything else when we got the car and I tried to replace them with stainless but the screws were too tight. So, I tapped/re-threaded the holes to 1/4" not knowing that they were #14. That was the first mistake. Then the screws went in just fine. But as I was told on this forum, Philips head screws did not exist then (mistake #2). After looking locally for slotted screws and not finding them, we bought some stainless hex heads, mounted each screw in a drill (my wife operating the drill) and me operating the grinder at the same time. After rounding the screws, we used a cut off wheel to create the slot. I'm sure many of you have done this many times. For those who need to know, 5/8" bolt length seems good.

The Eyre Torpedo continues to make steady progress. The side lamps and top bows are now in place. Meanwhile Gord Koll finished my replacement dadh for my '13 Touring. It's a work of art.

My 13 Dash. Thanks Gord! I have been trying to decide if I will make it look "weathered " to match the rest of the car or factory new. Right now I am leaning towards new.

Drove the 23 touring almost 30 miles yesterday. The engine is still pretty fresh (under 200 miles) so I keep it down to 20-25 mph.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
I exhibited fifty seven 11x14” prints of my ‘23 model T in a one man show in Ra’anana, Israel. Here is a view of one of the three walls of the installation. Most of the people attending the opening had never seen a model T Ford. So I spread the gospel according to T. Upon returning home after a 12 hour flight I immediately hopped into the T drove it for about two hours.

Re"The Bendix cover screws were shot like everything else when we got the car and I tried to replace them with stainless but the screws were too tight. So, I tapped/re-threaded the holes to 1/4" not knowing that they were #14."
Unless someone in the past has messed with the cover screw, they are smaller then 1/4" or #14. The thread is an interference type and the screws are closer to metric.
I decided that after all the work putting the Chevrolet overhead on my 21 that I was going to keep it. I put new rings in and took up the rods a bit. Because you are using 7/16 bolts in 1/2"+ holes it gives a lot of latitude to where the head sits so this time I installed locating pins where I wanted it to sit. The holes were a bit bigger then the pins I used but they are only there to located to install not keep it from moving later I also decided to replace the valve springs. Took a bit of searching thru the SBi catalog but found some that were withing the ballpark. To get the compression at working height I added shims at the top, no room at the bottom. Didn't want something too strong because A the cam is not that strong and B didn't want to break the rocker arms. I also plugged the unused rear water passage, took a little more off where the plate meets the block at the fire ring. And yes I am after coating very well with copper coat am reusing the two head gaskets.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
After searching for a 1926/’27 fan at Bakersfield. (The one I did find was cracked.) I ordered a new reproduction fan from Snyders. Very pleased with the quality of the reproduction fan. It is well made and looks exactly like the original. The holes lined up perfectly. It even comes black powder coated for durability. Anyone who needs an “improved” fan will not be disappointed.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
Well I worked on the 8in1 bed and its ready for final paint
After the wheels I started removing all the harware on the tailgate for the 8in1 to replace a couple boards so I can paint it with the bed. Whew, Im beat!
Then I done a compression test on the RPU and found #3 at zero. Pulled the head and decided new valves and tappets are in order
I finished the front wheels for the TT last night. Sorry I didnt take a photo, it was late. After the wheels I started removing all the harware on the tailgate for the 8in1 to replace a couple boards so I can paint it with the bed. Whew, Im beat!

I drove Ellie Mae up to Home Depot and three people commented that she looked like the Beverly HIllbilly's truck. She really doesn't, but since that is my goal it really gave me a boost. Can't wait to get the bed sides on and the rocking chair in the back!

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
Well thought I had my 20 yr project sold to a fella in NJ and then the tax man hit him. So, I decided I better go ahead and get it running again. Swapped out the incorrect low radiator for a high radiator and dinged up nickel shell. Mounted the rebuilt carb I bought from Tom Strickland last year at the Marietta swap meet. Ordered a fuel shutoff valve, fuel line, packing and pack nuts from Snyder’s. Got them and got the cab laid back to put the fuel tank in. Started to mount the Ruxtell shifter but didn’t have the right hardware, so got that sorted but not mounted yet. Hope to fire it up this week for the first time in about 10yrs. Cab’s gonna need some love before I mount the bed. It’s either getting my Anthony Autorocker or the original flatbed. Here’s a few pics.

Re: What have you done with your Model T in April?
I have started making Ellie Mae's bed. Hope she likes it! All of her wood is salt treated, then I put a penetrating stain on it, she is an outdoors type of girl. The outside frame is done, the actual bed won't take long. The sides are going to take a while, they have to be strong so passengers can push/pull them, but none of the stakes or rails can be straight, level, or plumb. That is where Jed's real carpentry skills will show and I think it will give the truck the Beverly Hills look I am after.

I haven't done a dang thing to it, but I did take it for a ride last Sunday. I discovered a guy with an ultimate man-cave, and another who is a contractor who I may hire to do some work on our house. The T does attract attention. The two guys that I met are into British sports car racing, and were fascinated by the T's wooden spoked wheels.

Taking Nelly-Bell the Raloo Rocket on it's first drive after getting new rings and different carb. Put a Stromberg OS-1 on. Photos later. When I get to the shop will re-adjust the valves, they need to be set at running temp. Also need to dial in the carb, right now it is loading up at a low idle. Too fast an idle, hard to get the Warford shifted at stand still even with using the transmission brake to slow the gears down. (might need to adjust the brake band too!)

Did some bending on foot feed and added a different return spring. Adjusted the valves. Here is my Stromberg OS-1. Still needs a little dialing in but runs better still some popping if I open too fast.
