Towing a Model T

Post by MikeSommers » Thu Jun 06, 2019 10:06 am

Whenever I am driving our Model T on a busy highway, my wife serves as the "caution" vehicle, following me with her caution lights flashing. In the event of having a breakdown, it might be advantageous to be able to tow the car to, let's say... a service station. I certainly realize that towing a Model T, when in 'neutral', can cause catastrophic failures with the transmission.

However, would it make sense to remove the spark plugs, shut off the gas, put it in high gear, and then tow it slowly to a service point?
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

Have a fully charged cell phone - drive with other Model T folks - have a good roadside assistance program in your contact list.

If you tow any vehicle - both folks driving the tow & the towed vehicle - have to be on the same page.

If you are driving on your own - not in a group of fellow Model folks - you are at the mercy of whoever stops to help.

It could end badly for both of you.

Mike, what you said is exactly what I would do if you are going any further than a mile.

Towing with a chain or tow strap is not legal in most states. If you must, as you suggested, pull the plugs, leave it in gear. Attach tow strap to the frame, not the front axle. If you call a tow truck make sure to insist on a flat bed, not a hook truck. JC Taylor insurance has a tow service that guarantees a flat bed.
