26 pickup battery cover

Post by TFan » Sun May 25, 2025 10:22 am

Looking for dimensions and or pics for the battery cover and the way it fits into the bed. I have the wood cut and rabbited for the floor but unsure of how the cover fits and whether I have to do more modifications to the opening when I go to cut it in. Thanks in advance for the help. Jim

My ‘26 Runabout has a wooden cover. I thought the pickup uses a rectangular steel version like this:

The cover on our '26 runabout is made of multiple strips of wood with two metal strips screwed in holding everything together.

Photos of the pressed metal battery cover on my 1926 RPU.
Same as the one in Langs catalogue.

10” by 12 1/2” x 3/4”.
The forward edge is angled.
The hole allows you to pull it out.

It is supported in the bed by a U-shaped flat frame, 2” wide, that is fastened to the bottom of the bed by the four galvanized carriage bolts seen in the photo.

There is a second support frame attached ~1” below the 2” wide steel frame but it currently is not being used. I’m not sure on the history of that frame, seen from underneath the pickup in the photo below.

K, Thanks for posting those pics. What I'm wondering is what is used to keep the lid from falling through the hole. I can see something in your pics but can't quite make it out. Thanks again Jim

I believe the 1925 and 1926 metal access cover are identical.

Thanks for the replies Folks, I think I now know what I need to fabricate or purchase to finish this project. Also a special thanks to K for the additional photos. Jim
