LED turn signals?

Post by Steve Jelf » Thu Jun 27, 2019 3:56 pm

To install turn signals I assume I'll need six volt bulbs, a flasher, a three-way switch, and maybe a pair of indicator lights. Is there anything else? Anybody have a diagram for the wiring?

Steve,

If you require 12 volts to power up your LED lights, get an older 6volt to 12volt converter on the bay that we use to use on our radios. They work excellent since LED's require so little to power up.

No, I buy six volt bulbs to match my batteries. The converter is for my phone charger.

Steve, if you get this done, please post the info including part numbers. I got a number of replies to my similar question in 2017 (I think), but I could not get anything to work. Hope you are successful with this! Cheers, Bill

A circuit diagram for my Morris is attached in the PDF, but the smoke travels the same way in the wires in a T as well ;-)

6V variants are available for the components.

The PDF is a bit of a story covering all the installation written for the Morris Club. It includes a few 'Anglo' terms, but I think you can figure them out (I trust!). I hope you enjoy it (just reverse the 'right' to 'left' for US readers ;-) )

Cheers

Hank, that is a nice touch and looks easy to add it in to the existing wiring. Might give it a go :-)

Thanks!

This is to be added not incorporated to existing wiring. If you require integrated like a modern car with dual brake lights, etc let me know and will post the schematic for it!

All the Best,

Hank

Lang’s has a good selection of turn signal and stop light kits in the accessories section of their catalog. All the parts you need to do it with a kit or individual parts to do it as you like.

I have not figured out putting the flasher before the switch. Usually on a set up we would be using on a T would have 2 flashers after a 3 position switch. One for the feed to the left lights and one to the right unless you were mounting a regular turn signal control which is designed to use 1 flasher.

Looks like that diagram should do it, but...

Here is a wiring diagram that can be integrated into the T wiring. It includes a black box (tail light converter - designed for trailer connections) to simplify the wiring to the tail lights if you have dual filament bulbs. I roughed out a diagram of the black box wiring to show what it does. Also if you are using LED Bulbs you need to get a Flasher that works with LED bulbs

One word of warning.
I have the 6v system but the 18W bulbs took a lot of current (6A)
So I converted to LED and bought a flasher suitable for LEDs (the old style 'hot wire' type needs the current of a filament bulb.

It all worked fine.....until I started the engine. Then either the RF from the coils or the dirty 6VDC supply from the generator messed up the solid-state flasher.

So I put filament bulbs back in the rear lights and put the hot wire flasher back.

Had the same issue wit the solid state flasher and LEDs. worked fine until I started the car. The flasher stopped working. I started trouble shooting using an analog VOM and found 28 volts of AC on the DC terminals. My car runs a distributor and a mid 60's 12 volt generator. Haven't had time to trouble shoot any further.

I installed a set of Logo Lites for a model A on my T, they are easily adaptable to a T. They run on 6 or 12 volts and they work great

I just signal with my left arm. No one behind me is looking for lights. They are looking at me.
