California without gasoline-burning cars?
LOS ANGELES — California without gasoline-burning cars? The idea is starting to be floated.
A top regulator came close Thursday, but ultimately backed away from directly raising the notion of giving the boot to exhaust-belching automobiles, a staple of life in the freeway-happy Golden State for more than a century.

Just an idea now...

Politics and engineering never mix well. With one in eight Americans living in Califuity, the electrical grid can not sustain the load let alone the power stations there are not enough by themselves.
How California transformed itself from a very decent user friendly state (I am a fifth generation Californian), to what it is today still blows my mind. My heart goes out for those of the real world.
All the Best,
Hank now in Tin-A-See
PS I left in 1982 and never looked back, I do love the state and my family history there. So sad!

Re: California without gasoline-burning cars?
Some see electric cars as coming, the wave of the future. Some see autonomous cars as the wave of the future. Some don't think gasoline cars will ever be replaced.BobD wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2019 12:37 amThis is currently getting a lot of responses on the AACA forum. https://forums.aaca.org/topic/327013-ca ... ning-cars/
I think electrics are coming. Better batteries for longer rides, enough recharging stations, all possible especially since they pollute less and require less maintenance.
I think autonomous are coming. Once they overcome the first snags, develop sensors that can operate in the rain, etc, these cars will be safer than human operated vehicles. It will happen. There are those who say they will play with the autonomous cars and run them off the road, but these autonomous vehicles will have video of every vehicle around them and what they are doing. The law will take care of those who play in traffic.
I doubt that this means the demise of the gasoline powered vehicle for pleasure, but most find commuting tedious and do not want to drive in traffic everyday. They had much rather sit back and text while the autonomous electric vehicle takes them safely where they want to go.

They do so many other things to screw themselves out there that this would not seem odd or out of place at all.

Re: California without gasoline-burning cars?
I only have one question. How do you suppose they will replace the lost revenue from the fuel tax? Raise property taxes, Raise income tax, put another road use tax on electricity? maybe all three stand by for Government replacement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do it right or do it over, your choice. Drive like everyone is out to get you!

Re: California without gasoline-burning cars?
I have 2 questions : 1...why would anyone want to live in California? 2...what will happen the first time some tree-hugging dummy freezes to death when he/she/it runs the battery flat in their all-electric vehicle when they skid off the beaten path in a roadside mishap in a snowstorm or some similar even, and need to stay warm while awaiting rescue by someone driving a gas or diesel powered vehicle hmmm?

Re: California without gasoline-burning cars?
Electric or gas, often the car has skidded of the road don't run well anymore, so it no longer matters in this part of the country. By time you go over the bank and crash into a few trees and rocks, well shit happens and people freeze to death in gas buggies too. Happens often enough around here, car goes off the road and can't be seen even though they are only a few yards away because of the undergrowth along the roads and steep slope, car and driver is found hours later. I think the last one, lady was trapped in car unseen for over 8 hours, she survived and that was on somewhat well traveled road.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

I suppose that will never happen in a petrol-driven vehicle then...?Victor Borg wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 1:58 pm2...what will happen the first time some tree-hugging dummy freezes to death when he/she/it runs the battery flat in their all-electric vehicle when they skid off the beaten path in a roadside mishap in a snowstorm or some similar even, and need to stay warm while awaiting rescue by someone driving a gas or diesel powered vehicle hmmm?

Sounds like a big, fat mug of "Who Cares ?" Let those who choose to remain in California
complete the political mission of self-destruction in the bubble they have created, or allowed
others to create. In the interim, I am bummed over what has become of my home state, but
reality being what it is, I am powerless to do anything but cheer from the sidelines as I roll
my eyes in predictable (faux) disbelief over the BS California Culture spews out like a treadmill
ride of bad comedy. The fun never ends ...

Re: California without gasoline-burning cars?
The economy of California is the largest in the United States, boasting a $3.0 trillion gross state product as of 2018.[9] As a sovereign nation (2017), California would rank as the world's fifth largest economy, ahead of the United Kingdom

Dual Motor All-wheel-drive powertrain with dynamic suspension, as well as ‘300,000 lbs of towing capacity’.

Electric motors sure have torque, that is why they are used for locomotives, but a pick up with ‘300,000 lbs of towing capacity’? I don't doubt the capability of the electric motors, but will the truck weigh enough to get traction?

Re: California without gasoline-burning cars?
I have to put that 300,000 pounds into other terms to get a perspective. That's 150 tons, or roughly the gross vehicle weight of four 18 wheel semis fully loaded . . . I don't think that outfit could tow them.

The fun fact is that the electric grid is already overloaded in Califunny. When everybody goes electric think of whats going to happen when they all get home from work and plug in their cars.

Re: California without gasoline-burning cars?
The sad part is that anything that happens in California will follow the jet stream and spread like a virous to the bulk of the country in a few years. If it is not stopped there, the rest of the country will suffer.I really do wish those folks out there would put all their heads together and fix the homeless problems there and the lack of resources they allready suffer from before finding ways of stressing the remaining resources like electricity.
What folks don't thing about is our reliance on oil is what helps us to live without serious restraint. The resources come from other parts of the world where they are not needed. OIl can be had from alot of places besides the US. Electricity, well, if we don't make it here, none of our neighbors have a excess they can send down here or up to us. We would do without unless ALOT of solar panels and wind mills go up. Power plants of any type have been so heavly regulated they can't build them fast enough to keep up with demand if they planned 100 nuclear plants starting tomorrow.
Lithuim batterys. Great things. But no one thinks ahead of their nose here.
At this time the "bad guy" is BIG OIL.20 years from now,if we all went with the new ideas presented, "BIG LITHIUM" would be the bad guy. As in the folks supplying it,would control the economy just as big oil does.Lithium suppliers would dictate range and lenght of charge just as folks claim they control gas mileage now.

I believe that Governor Newsome and and his cronies in the State legislature truly believe if they passed a law mandating the sun not come up tomorrow, that it would not! Who do these freaks think they are? We are a very long way from independence from fossil fuels, regardless of legislation.

Thats a wonderful idea but they need to add to it no power generation from fossil fuels. As well as no importation of power!

Everything I ever hear in the news about california is more regulations,or more stupid laws pulled out of someone's skid marked underware.
The sad thing is the Jet Stream might pick up some of this disorder,or virous, germ, disease,or whatever it is that is killing common sense out there and spread it to other parts of the country.
