I drove mine [And any T] for the first time! Just got it Tuesday and got brave enough for a quick spin today. I think I have to learn to drive all over again.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
Erik and his father Bob Johnson stopped by to see my 1913 Runabout. Bob originally found the car beside a barn in dilapidated condition back in July 1951. B/W picture of him behind the wheel after getting the remains running. He sold the car and after 68 years and several owners (plus a “re-body”) he was reunited with it.

Continued runabout reassembly.
Today I installed radiator, coil box, wiring, spark plugs, and that most exasperating Model T part—hood latches. They would be easy if I had three hands.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
My garage looks like a Christmas tree with T part "ornaments" hung everywhere! I'm using Eastwood chassis primer, which will be followed by their chassis gloss paint. It sprays really well. For all my priming so far I've been using this two piece Harbor Freight HVLP gun set:
https://www.harborfreight.com/professio ... 94572.html
I've been really happy with how well it works for only $40 (after using their normal 20% coupon). I used the big gun for shooting all the grey primer on the body parts, and the detail gun for the bits and pieces shown in the picture below.

Did a bunch of long overdue maintenance and repairs, prepping for the Michigan Jamboree, next week!! Rear brakes clean and adjust, clean carb, clean battery terminals, clean and re-gap plugs, clean battery terminals, wire ends, and charged, adjust timing, installed starter drive assymbly (will only use rn an emergency, until ring gear is replaced), adjust fan, adjust bands...the list goes on and on. Will change the oil tomorrow, give Frank a well deserved bath!

Re: What have you done to your T in August
Drove it to a club function, first time I had a trip with some mileage (20 mile round trip). On the way home, lost the mag and hopefully the kevlar brake band needs a simply adjustment because the brakes were going away as the pedal dropped further. Will investigate, hopefully both are simple fixes.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
I replaced one incorrect headlight bar bolt with the correct carriage bolt, then replaced the incorrect hex nuts with square nuts. The old girl is actually running quite well, and I'm sort of playing around with simple little things. Will replace the hex nuts on the passenger' side next week.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
My new speedster had some bad noises so I pulled it down. The odd measurement in the clutch turned out to be the retaining bolt left and everything moved back running on the 4th main. The center main and two rods were very loose. The front cam bearing was bad. Looked like it was new but the locating hole was oversize and the shell halved didn't fit at the break line. The timing gear was binding at one spot every rotation. I changed out the bearing and this problem went away. Also an .008" bow in the crank and a cracked low drum. Lots of odd things which means lots of work to do. Good thing I like this work.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
[image][/image]I had time to get the 27 depot hack started for the first time since last fall. Charged the battery, cleaned the terminals, turned on the gas, fussed with remembering where the ignition switch made contact, and it started. Despite having brake lever forward since last fall, I had to jack up a rear wheel. Once it started was able to pull the e brake on, and stop the wheel without a problem. Ran on mag too, generator charged fine! I need to add air to the tires, wash the dust off, and add fresh gas to take it for a drive.

I took the afternoon off and went to the Waterbury Car show, and had nice talk with Don lang and few other folk. The picking were kinda thin ,but did pick up new Anderson Time, a nice 15 headlight bucket and a spot light bracket. There was a nice ford torpedo and a curve dash old for sale in the car coral.

Been installing window glass in 26 Tudor and prepping to purchase interior kit. I have seen video with roof wood frame off to attach headliner, but don't quite understand how headliner is attached at the header of the windshield since there is no wood there. Am I missing something?

Steam and gas show today. A buddy brought his 19 wood cab truck . A couple more buddys showed up with 21 DB coupe and 22 center door. Took a few photos and we headed to the next town for a parade about 10 miles away.
The red truck behind my TT in the photo had twin flathead V-8 on the bed with a huge belt pully. It was a threshing truck in its day.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
I've been working on my 1915 runabout's bike speedometer. Bicycle speedometers work very well for Model T use, but the little wires can easily be damaged by road hazards. So I've taken to encasing the wires in protective coverings.
The sensor fits into 3/8" steel tubing that protects the wires. The cover over the sensor is ¹³⁄₃₂" ID brass tubing (non-ferrous/non-magnetic).
The tricky part was welding the tubing to the 18 gauge bracket without burning it full of holes.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
Took the Voltage Regulator off and put a Cut Out back on, reset my generator output to 5 amps and it seems to be running like a charm...bloody VR wasn't charging the battery at all. It did initially I think because I got it set up correctly, but then I didn't see any movement after I turned on and off the headlights, soooo back to the old cut out for me.
Fun never quits!

Re: What have you done to your T in August
I reinstalled my rebuilt steering column last week. I also installed the wood block behind the steering bracket, which my car lacked. There is no play in the steering wheel now.
My car did not have wood blocks between the pan ears and frame. There are indentations in the frame and left pan ear from the two being pounded together over the years. I installed the blocks over the weekend and bought the bolt kit for them from one of the vendors. The problem with the short bolts is that there is not enough space between the bolt and nut to allow inserting a cotter pin. I measured a maximum material allowance of .234". But, my frame measured .190" and the pan ears are .120". That means I need another .076" to install a cotter pin. There wasn't enough length in the bolt to drill a new hole so I used lock washers. The description on Lang's website (not who I purchased from) said the bolts should be 7/8" long. Those I bought are shorter than 3/4". Clearly, I received out-of spec bolts. I will address the situation again when I pull the engine for a rebuild. For now, it works but I'm not happy with the wonky bolts. Has anyone else had this problem?
I started making new floorboards yesterday. I made a lot of sawdust milling 4/4 lumber down to 9/16" thick. I think that the floorboards that came on my car were once someone's kitchen cabinets. My car did not have wood blocks between the pan ears and frame. Re: What have you done to your T in August
Today it's nice and warm, in the 80s and I'm taking a break from my top bow project (you may have heard) to replace two front tires, flaps and tubes. The two rears were done earlier this year. I originally purchased all four Riverside tires and tubes from the Montgomery Wards catalog and picked them up myself at the Oakland, CA warehouse. That was 1971. $300 for all. Well, at least that's what I borrowed from my Grandmother to get them. Yes, I paid her back in full within three months along with free lifetime rides. She loved the ice cream runs and I have the VHS tapes to prove it. Anyway, they're almost 50 years old and while I added another 600 miles to them early this summer, their time has come. I realize I'm trading USA tires for Vietnamese but it will happen sooner or later and I'd rather take care of it here at my garage.

Yes, they should go. Whenever the subject of tire replacement comes up we hear from people who have been running on the same tires since 1958 or whatever without trouble. But the fact remains that rubber does deteriorate with age, and running on ancient tires is running on borrowed time, no matter how good they look. I agree it's better to change them at home than out on the road.

New exhaust manifold and some exhaust wrap to help keep the cab a bit cooler.
Another weekend at the great Oregon steam up.
We took another look at the old school bus owned by the museum. Beautiful bus somehow saved from being destroyed all these years.
We also made it to the all Ford car show in champoeg state park.

I used Murray Fahnestock’s method of recharging the magnets in my magneto (pp. 235 to 240 in the compilation of articles titled”The Model T Ford Owner”). My ECCT shows the output raised from an inadequate 14 volts to over 30 volts at 1200 rpm. I’m super pleased with the results.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
After spending most of yesterday and today cleaning up and putting things away so I could get the runabout out of the shop, Shorty and I went to town for some shopping.
Actually she didn't buy anything. All she cared about was getting a ride. Last week I ran the fresh engine to cure the manifold paint, but this was the first time since last year the car has moved under its own power.
That distinctive noise and the sudden lack of power told me to look under the hood. I was expecting just a loose plug, but it was beyond loose. Fortunately I carry spare plugs.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
I've been running a Holley NH on the 1915 runabout. This morning I removed it and put on the stock Model G. Then I drove to Winfield for banking, a round trip of about 37 miles.
Coming home I couldn't pull the hand lever back for neutral and had to use the pedal. In the parking lot at the farm supply I took out the floor boards and found this. Apparently I forgot to lock down the lock nut.

This Spring in Bakersfield I bought a horn. The front hole on the bracket was torn out and someone had braised it. I should’ve got a picture of it before I started. But here are the progress photos:
As you can see I used a washer to add a eye. I can ground and file the world smooth. But the photos I took of that were too blurry.

Yesterday,
It was a rainy day but we took T out to look for Anna.
"Where is Anna" is a remember drive for a lady, Anna, working as a nurse during the First World War near to Diksmuide en Veurne in the Flanders Fields.
A few cars but most of drivers were on Motorcycles all older as 1931.
The oldest was a 1900 De Dions-Button tricycle.
Photos in attachment, just enjoy.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
Took off the Bosch front plate distributor setup on my Chevrolet overhead. I am going to install the coils and timer back on. Will have to fab up a bracket to mount under the hood like 26/27's. This is more in the direction that I was planing all along anyway.
I found while working on it that the aluminum pulley had lost is set screw so was running loose on the crank it also had a crack in the casting where the pin goes thru. The only original type pulley I had was a little loose on the crank so I brazed it up and turned back to size.
Never seem to have camera when I am doing this stuff, but then my hands usually are too dirty to be holding a camera.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
I gave my son and his two oldest boys their first Model T driving lessons. My son is ready for the road now. Th oldest boy,age 11, says he will practice some more and take his driver's test in the T when he goes to the DMV to get his license! The youngest one, at 9 is amazed that he drove a car almost 11 times his age. Their younger brother loves the car, and laughs every mile when he rides. He will be 3 on October 25th.
And I made arrangements to get our top installed.-

Today I got the chassis for my "new" T standing on its own 4 feet for the first time.
I always feel that this is the first major plateau when building a car from scratch. The next major step is getting the engine in and running, and the next is the first drive. There are lots of smiles at each level.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
I am getting Henrietta ready for the National tour in Maryborough, Queensland at the end of September. In the spirit of maintaining her 'as found' appearance, I have determined not to pull the back axle to check things out. She has a full complement of grease instead of oil in the differential, so she is well lubed. As a precaution, I have fitted a new set of lined brake shoes so I have a means of slowing at least, should a thrust washer fail and I lose crown and pinion mesh and thus, brakes. She already had sleeves on the cams to get the original cast iron shoes in good contact with the drums. The shoes were caked with old, hard grease, and I spent some time scraping same off the backing plates.
Axle tapers, keyways and bearing surfaces were really good, very little play in the bearings. I fitted modern oil seal type seals to the housing and fitted the new shoes, re-fitted the wheels and took her for a test run. One drum was getting hot so that wheel was pulled and the cam spacer removed.
Now I have a car free to push in neutral, but with a handbrake which operates extremely well as soon as It comes off the neutral position. I am certain it will hold the car when I tilt my trailer to load it.
Now all I have to do is check the clearance on the used rod I replaced some months ago. It may need a little taken off the cap to take out a little rattle that has developed of late. Off to my mate's workshop to use his hoist again. He calls it his height adjustable pit!

Sweet frontX4 Oliver, Pat!
Too much to say about you guys this month, cool, very OT thus far for me still. Will continue for some time.
The 18: Took Maw for a Toodle, took Daughter for a Toodle and found a spark plug miss, made it back on 3, cleaned the 40 year old Champ X plugs, might have an intake leak/leaks due to uneven plug looks, took Maw out again, fair but stutters a tiny bit in high so things to investigate.
I used to blame a coil for needing to warm him up first, should do that anyway and now I blame/look at plugs and intake gaskets from 35-40 years ago. Warm your T some before just because.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
I admire each of you that has done anything with your T in August. In South Texas it has just been too HOT to do anything. So I have done virtually nothing. When/if Fall ever get here I will need to catch up. I say if because some years it seems like we skip Fall all together.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
Bought this unrestored hand crank coil tester in Buffalo a few weeks back. Removed the black overpainting to get down to the original blue hue. I removed all the magnets to clean the flywheel and recharge the magnets. Also had to take the Jewel ammeter apart and reset the main pivot shaft to get it working. Just need to replace the four insulated spacers and rebuild the coil receiving box to get it up and going.

I'm making progress on my new floorboards to replace ol' Aunt Lula's kitchen cabinets. (That's what they look like to me.) Boards are milled, jointed and glued. I finished making hardboard templates for the two upper boards and should have them ready by this weekend.

I just bought a brand new Brass Work radiator still in the box. It belongs to elderly gentleman who passed away. Looking forward to installing next weekend.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
I solved the mystery of my infuriating rattle. After hours and hours of searching for the loose, broken or otherwise faulty part which caused me to loose what sanity I had left, I can now enjoy my "quiet" '23 Touring. All it took was some 91 octane and a little less timing advance. My Reeder aluminum high compression head has lost it's bark.

John, yes it's quite a fan. That thing moves a lot of air. New car so I'm not sure I need all that fan yet.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
Well, I didn't finish until today, but did most of the work in August... Does that count? . I replace mybincirrect irons and bows (fmcut down from a touring), with more appropriate ones, and fashioned a top from a Tractor Supply tarp. I don't know how long it will last, but functionally, it's a WHOLE lot better, although it won't win any awards (except maybe a Rube Goldberg...)

Dallas... I'll be ready now! . .
I kind of wonder how much bleeding I'll get from the tarp. The waterproofing is a tad sticky, and clothes get a but yellow, working with it.

Re: What have you done to your T in August
Made the bracket to mount coil box under the hood on the 21 with the Chevrolet over head. The first try put the box too far out and up.
After the 2ed try, found the choke wire was shorting out # 2 plug so moved it and engine settled down now I am a happy camper; Now I have to recharge the magnets. They are dead dead! I have 10-11 days till our clubs next tour to get it done. If I have to pull the hogs head to get things lined up to use the KR Wilson charger I am going to put a wood band in for low or brake (I only have one, so have not decided). It runs fine up to a point on 6 volts but upper cruising speed not so much. Failing to get the magnets recharged, I am going to add a 12 volt battery just to power the coils for it and the next tour. Right now I can't get any N/S reading thru the hogs head.
After re-drilling the mounting holes 2ed try that now fits. In order to change spark plugs will have to pull the box off the frame. After the 2ed try, found the choke wire was shorting out # 2 plug so moved it and engine settled down now I am a happy camper; Now I have to recharge the magnets.
