Journey's and Joyrides.

Post by Rich Eagle » Sat Apr 06, 2019 2:56 pm

This could be a thread to post any short or long outing anyone takes and doesn't care to start their own thread.
Today our local group had it's "Dust Off" tour. It was almost nice enough to take an open car. The Touring was out of gas so the Speedster seemed like the next choice.
FSx01.jpg
The new fire-station was our destination. It was particularly exciting for me to see the old American-Lafrance ladder truck that I got to sit in when I was 5 or 6 years old. I have never been the same since. I didn't seem the same since it had been restored but then many things aren't as I remember them.
FSx02.jpg
The 1930 Model A is new to our club and quite nice. We went to a nearby place for lunch after.
FSx03.jpg
Again I had the only T on our trip but it was good to get out and play even if it was a bit chilly.
I hope all of you are getting out this Spring for some early fun.

Nice thread Rich.
We were a little warmer here and had a nice long drive to see mom.
Just a spring reminder...
2 deer crossed in front of me about 2 miles from home. I pulled the Ruckstell into low and crawled up to where they crossed and sure enough, 1 more jumped across !! :!:
Midday too, usually they roam more around dusk.

Just be careful everyone !! ;)

After visiting mom, later on we went to the local ice cream stand. :)
She just had a vanilla cone.
I had a hot fudge sundae with toasted pecans...
Yum Yum 👅
Was cooling off by then, so a short trip around the block on the way home. Made for a great day !! :D

Planning to load the back seat with some noisemakers and head over to by buddy's backyard range before it rains. Gangster T !!

My trip this morning started out as a journey but then turned into a joy ride because it takes me across the longest covered bride in the United States and the fourth longest in the world. I had to go to the "big box store' to pick up more paint, shelving, and supplies. The joy was all the friendly waves and friendly honking as I drove to and from the store. The weather was great too.

Cool Bridge.
Joy and I took the Tudor to breakfast this morning but forgot the camera. Just a few sprinkles.

I like to use one of my old Fords for little trips locally for things like groceries, hardware store, post office, etc, etc, and I can tell you that due to the constant and necessary maintenance, monitoring, adjustments, etc, etc,....every trip is a "journey", and every trip is a "joyride"! I guess that's just another way of verifying an expression that I learned on this forum,.....that every time I drive a Model T it's a parade, and every time I park it, it's a car show! My wife sometimes asks me why it took an hour and a half to go to the post office and back, and I end up explaining that when I came out of the post office, the "group" that had assembled around the Model T made it a "car show"!

We finally drove the Coupe to breakfast after being home-bound for a couple weeks sharing colds. Driving it had been missed. Also shown is a gravel loop I have been busy with. The road in front of our house was widened and parking eliminated. Good exercise with primitive tools.

As if driving to breakfast and a few tours and trips a year weren't enough I drive to the "Geezer's" lunch every two weeks. Some retired engineers I used to work for still get together. They seem to enjoy seeing the old cars and I try taking a different one when the weather is good. I remember how much being the guy with the old cars helped my career. Somehow they remember you and think you are more capable for keeping old things working.
Many of them were clever, inventive and on the cutting edge of energy technology but still appreciated the Model T and it's mechanics.

I'm sure many of us agree that Model T's make us more interesting in many ways.

Last weekend my speedster was the only T but a bunch of us did the "North Cascade Loop" scenic route. Round trip, including some optional forest service road adventures, I put 497 miles on the car and only ran out of gas once. Fortunately I had old car buddies to the rescue with a can of gas. With temps in the 50's to mid 80's it was a great 3 day weekend. Almost all 2 lane roads that were usually following rivers or streams, Sorry no pics but I stole this from the web for one of the lakes we went by.

The weather was decent today so a few of us took a trip to the town north of us for lunch. We rendezvous'd for the obligatory "group car picture" as some guys came from different areas. In the background is the former New Departure-Hyatt factory at Sandusky Ohio. This is where the rear roller bearings for our axles were made. Sadly its idled after changing hands several times. But we had a great lunch together and a little bit of driving anyway!

This week we have a special guest. Taking the Mock 09 instead of the Coupe seemed more appropriate and spacious. It's the first trip since a cooler Valentine's day. I haven't re-soldered the horn bracket yet. Too many other fun things to do.

Putting the top up made some shade and factory Model T air conditioning worked just fine ! (Top of windshield tilted in)

Larry, if it's the rusty Coupe you are asking about it is my assembled Coupe. I call it a '22 because of the engine I'm using. I elected to use bail door handles because I like them and had some. The pillars are steel covered so it is later.
While not right, it does capture the image of what I would love to find in one piece.
Thanks

I have been driving the wheels off the TT. I drove it to the fire station for our meeting tonight. We had to meet with the town at the park. The guys wanted to take the TT, so I set the bed for seating and off we went.

With all the fun of birthday, 4th of July, anniversary, having the family around and building some parts I had put off getting the Harley parts up to the plater. A mundane task turned into a wonderful trip on some old roads.

Terry plates nickel for me and also runs the local Speedway. I don't know how he has time. He also has this fantastically funny fire truck. It reminds me of Smokey Stover in the old comics. It had been mercilessly assembled or modified before he bought it and he is adding his touches to it.

OK, perhaps not Model T fun but while I'm on a roll I got the '07 Buick out for morning coffee with the guys. I hadn't taken it for a good photo shoot since we've had it finished. (10 years?) I longed for a 2 cyl car for 40 years and now have one. I don't drive it like a T as the engine parts are harder to replace and known to fail at higher speeds on tours. It still is a ball for around town. Every car compliments a model T in one way or another.

That Buick is just the cats ears Rich ! Maybe someday?
I loaded my Amish neihbor and his family, my son and his family and the misses into the TT and headed for the icream shop this evening. 14 people in the back and the wife and grandson and I up front. I figure we had at least a ton in the back. Chicago straight drive was all she needed even on the hills. Back roads with lots of gravel and my grand daughter singing all the way home like she was the only one in the back " she is 3 yrs old" just about a perfect day. Passed by an Amish wedding on the way home and had more thumbs up than Ive ever seen. Wall to wall smiles. Snapped a photo on the road as the sun was setting. Shadows are great if you look you can see the heads in back.

Not so exciting as some but a great early evening ride after a hectic afternoon. Mid-trip found me randomly pulling into the thrift store. Figured if the "real Mr. Thrifty" can sniff out a bargain so can I!! Got me a brand new pair of Columbia Kali shorts that actually fit without making me look like part of a gang for $2.96! I believe these would easily be around $40 in a "real store". Sorry for being sideways..you know if you click on the pic it turns normal!

Our club's monthly business meeting was replaced by a pot luck and burgers at a newer members place near Terreton, ID. A 40 mile trip for us in the Tudor. Different cars drive different speeds so we don't caravan but arrived there about the same time. It was windy but very good company and lots to eat. The drive back got us home by sunset. The potato fields, canals and Snake River give off a nice coolness in the evenings this time of year. I don't know why we don't do that more often. Another way we enjoy the old cars.

The Grand-kids don't often ride in the Speedster. Joy conceded to take one in her car and trade off on rides to and from the club barbecue last night. MaryEllen got the first ride. Grampa took the wrong turn and we were lost for a half hour trying to find the right street. Grama is a pretty good navigator after all.
The clouds rolled in and it looked like a sprinkle when Atom and I left for home. Nope, it became a full fledged down pour as bad as any I have seen. Thank goodness Grama insisted on a blanket. Atom figured out to pull it over his head as the stinging of hail was quite painful. It was touchy seeing through the monocle and glasses by we arrive home safe and sound. We were thoroughly soaked and shivering but agreed it was quite the adventure. I didn't have the camera or the time to take pictures.
Neither were deterred from wanting to do the same trade for breakfast this morning. They have acquired the same pioneer spirit for having fun as their Father had. You will notice the makeshift seat-belt for safety.
The full model T experience is not complete without rain, hail or snow in an open car for way longer than we like. I think many of you who have been there will agree.

We do a lot of day trips around our area, lots to see and little traffic. One of our favorites is the Bull River Hwy, MT Hwy 56. It runs up between the Cabinet Mountains and the West Cabinets for about 35 miles with Bull River running down the middle.

Our car group drove to West Yellowstone to take in a show at the Playmill Theater there. We found some fun backroads to stay out of the traffic.
SW163.jpg
Driving up on Tuesday and back on Wednesday made a quick trip for the later cars. We started 2 hours ahead, met for lunch and arrived an hour after them. Model T driving gives more hours of driving over the same 140 mile trip. Only about 30 miles was on roads with tourist traffic but it took an extra 30 miles to avoid more.
S06141.jpg
It was nice to get up there as we hadn't been there this year yet. Being the only T and traveling mostly alone is safer but still enjoyable.
S06124.jpg
The little T did fine despite the constant worry of all that could go wrong. I guess the worry makes us check things we might overlook before a trip.

It is great traveling. I don't know why we don't do more except there is worry to overcome about traffic and Model T quirks. We travel with no spare tires, just tubes, patches and a pump. The traffic is a concern but we haven't had any close calls in years. Driving 33 mph on the shoulder with 2 lanes of cars passing at 65 or better certainly keeps my attention. But the nicest people in the world visit with us every time we stop. Often they ask if we need help. A language barrier is with many of the Yellowstone tourists but always delightful. Best of all it recharges my enthusiasm for the hobby. So many folks are truly delighted to see an car that old on the road. And the satisfaction of making it home safe and sound is very rewarding. I have considered this may be the last trip for us or the car for many years now and that makes it easier to go somehow.
This is the cozy little cabin we stayed in overnight. It's always worth the cost for the few times we get out.

Last Sunday I had a standing appointment with a fellow "car guy", a neighbor who lives five miles away. Of course he was more interested in seeing Lizzie than me. The wind was blowing at 30mph with stronger gusts. I (stupidly) left the top up, which had me fearful that the wind might take it. We survived the round trip by "tacking" with the wind. Lizzie is a runabout. I do think a touring car, presenting more "canvas" would have been "three sheets to the wind"! Running with the wind Lizzie was flying ! Against the wind, the load was obvious. Driving felt a lot like managing a small boat under sail. A short trip but a fun one !

Getting ready to leave in 3 to 4 days for 2 months to the Southwest with our T's on trailer and will be going to Nevada,Utah,Colorado, Arizona and California to a bunch of National parks and out of the way places. We plan to drive the T's (3 of us) on as many back roads as we can and will be spending some time in Moab seeing how many of the jeep trails we can drive. All 3 T's are set up with Ruckstell's and aux. transmissions as well as we are running 5.25x21 6ply tires. We drive them on the back roads all of the time and are really looking forward to this trip.

Hi Dennis,

Oh my goodness, that poor little car is LOADED! Is the rear suspension bottomed out?

When you have a chance, could you share some pictures of the running board kitchen box and any other camping specific creations that you have on board? I am always on the lookout for ideas. I hope to do some Model T camping at some point. Good luck with your journey. Happy Trails, Bill

Thanks Dallas and Bill, We will mostly be on radio silence so updates may not happen but I will post about the trip when we get back. Bill, I have included some pictures of the kitchen and a handy rack on the back of the roadster as well as a couple of other camping rig that I have. The suspension on the roadster has some extra leafs in the springs so it handles the load pretty well. (it usually scales at 2600 to 2700lbs)

Just got home after almost 2 months on the road in Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona and California. We towed 3 T's behind motor homes and took the T's on some truly awesome drives. We put 4,250 miles on the motor homes and almost 2,000 miles on the Ts. When I have a chance I will try and post some of the pictures and stories. For now it is time to unload and catch up around the house (winter is coming).

One of our favorite day trips is up to Troy, MT on the Bull River Hwy, MT 56. In this picture we are crossing the Kootenay River at Troy. We usually go over to Kootenay Falls just up stream and walk across the swinging bridge.

In the past 24 hrs I was able to drive 3 model Ts. The first was my 1909 Touring which I haven't driven since I rebuilt the rear end last Fall. I drove it to the filling station and put $16.00 worth in which filled it up. (@1.89 a gal.) One fellow asked if I bought it with stimulus money.
The second was my 1914 Touring which sat in front as a Christmas decoration. It had not been started in 3 years. Both started fine and I was pleased I could still crank them. I loose some muscle tone over the winters. For those keeping track my 12V motorcycle battery was dead from lack of charging. I replaced it with one from my '15 which I bought at the same time (2015) but charged 5 or 6 times since.
Tues145.jpg
One of my favorite products is the red rubber gas hose for acetylene lights. However it hasn't withstood the outside storage for the last 5 or 6 years. It still is kind of pretty even when it breaks. I have had no problem with it on cars that are stored indoors and some is 20 years old or more. The hose under the car was fine so it must be the UV exposure.
Tues146.jpg
The third car was our regular trip in the Rusty coupe to pick up breakfast. The cute waitress brought the food out and it was good to see real people.
Many people still smile and wave at us in the Model Ts but some seem to have more of a "Ya! Go for it" attitude now.
Driving the Ts helps make things feel more normal for me these days.

I've had my '17 Touring out for a few test runs since installing disc brakes, safety hubs and ten tooth pinion. It's cool here in the Thumb of Michigan but OK if you dress for it. Unfortunately, there is really nowhere to go but I did gas up ($1.24/gal) and get a few groceries with the T. I don't think I'll be going out today as a moment ago I saw snow blowing horizontally outside our bay window. It's still April so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

With the Coupe in the hospital we took the Touring to pick up breakfast. Joy hadn't rode in it this year yet. The weather was great. We are still doing take-out even tho the restaurants are open now and only 35 cases of virus in this part of the State. I'll take my chances driving the T.

I had this adventure in Betsy, my 1924 Model T cut-off touring (now a pickup) just yesterday:

I left the house around 9:30 am in the Model T to drive one of my normal routes from my house to the town of Otto, a 16 mile round trip. On the way north, I had to stop briefly with some other cars for some construction. While I was waiting, an old lady (yes, older than me) walked up and asked me if I could give her a ride back to the auto shop where she had left her car. She said that her neighbors had given her a ride home from the shop, then she couldn’t get back into her house because she had left her house keys in her car back at the shop. She said she was too embarrassed to go to back to the neighbors and ask for another ride, so she had started walking down from her house to the highway intending to ask one of the road workers (!) for help.

She said she selected me instead because she and her husband had owned a variety of classic cars in the past and they had always had good experiences with “car people”. Since I was just out for a joy ride anyway, I told her to climb in and I would take her back to the auto shop in the Model T. Once we were under way, she started telling me how she had traveled all over the world, lived in Mexico City, China, Russia, Sweden, and several other countries over the years. Her husband is a banker away on business and her daughter is a world famous artist in New York City. She gave me some hot stock tips and told me that silver coinage was about to take off in value and that I should buy some. She even gave me the name of her precious metals broker (who turned out to be legit after some research).

She got so wrapped up in the ride and telling me her stories that we zipped right past the turnoff for the auto shop the first time and had to turn back around. Well, turns out the auto shop was a guy working out of his home garage on a narrow side road, which I had never driven on before and turned out to be very twisty with some steep hills.

But, we got there OK and she picked up her house keys and we started back to her house. Well, her house was up another steep and twisty side road, but the Model T got us there like a champ. I dropped her off at her house and she took out her phone to take some pictures of me and the Model T to send to her husband and daughter.

We ended up traveling almost 30 miles on the Model T during the trip. We both agreed that the experience had made both of our days. 😊

I appreciate your thoughts Dave. I'm still waiting for rust. There is a little bubbling underneath the 1974 Imron.
In the meantime, I stuff a little horsehair where the 40 year old vinyl tears to cover up the foam.

Another beautiful morning drive in the Speedster got me thinking about the carburetor again. The minimal little NH with an overhead does quite well for a guy who drives slow now. The head came with the whole manifold system. It is also the lower compression Roof. I often think about a more exotic single or double system that would bolt right up. However this T is much peppier that my other T's with it's light weight and no magnet weight.

I could try domed pistons or look at shaving it.
Maybe when I get some other projects finished....

Our club did our town cafes first car show on Saturday and another Bull River mini tour Sunday. Up the Bull River Hwy. to the Ross Creek Cedars. Then on to Troy for lunch and then to the Kootneai Falls and the Swinging Bridge. Ended the day at my place with pizza and beer. Perfect weather and day.

It also gave us an excuse to drive some of the alleys downtown. There are still some great buildings but it's hard to find a shot without modern improvements showing.

We drove to collect a Christmas Tree today. It looks much like other such years with the Coupe.
CpTree.jpg
We sparked some conversation in the store parking lot. It turned to Barracudas this time rather than Camaros.
It's always fun to drive the T. This year the amp gage doesn't work until it warms up. Might be moisture around the generator brushes.
It's helping to keep the doldrums away.

The weather today is probably the best so far this year. I drove the Coupe to the Dentist's today after not driving for 12 days. I put a tire with tread on the front and it holds air and feels good. It also steers great after the spindle episode.
The receptionist had ridden her Harley to work. She and the dental assistant both enjoyed seeing the old Coupe and asked about it. Then driving home I got thumbs up and a nice looking lady rolled down her window and smiled and waved as she passed. She waited at the stop light to take a picture. These pretty young ladies reinforce the feeling of being a kid when I'm around the old cars even though I know it's the car. (Rusty as it is.) I guess I'll go sand on some rusty parts. Model T's always make the day go better.
Sorry, no photos.

Glad its back getting miles and smiles Rich! We took the 26 pickup for icecream this week and parked 3 spaces from a real nice canary yellow 34 ford coupe " built ford tuff with chevy stuff".

The crowd was all around my little beat up pickup. Nobody around "pretty in chrome"

It is interesting what folks enjoy. We could watch people checking out the Rusty Coupe from our restaurant seats today. Several groups walked around it, took pictures and motioned the engine cranking or windshield wiper actions. They tend to peer though the dirty windows and smile. It puzzles me how some days bring the attention out more than others. Spring weather and slight freedom from the Covid thing may be it today. I expected my shiny cars to get attention but the old ones get as much or more. Listening to the other customer conversations about the "Funny Old Car" is always a treat to. Their insights and assumptions are delightful. Those that realize who owns it have nice questions and comments.
It suits me fine.

Rich, I'm amused by the attention you get. Part of the fun is folks' comments and reactions. I hardly ever take Lizzie to town. On county roads we're pretty much invisible. I think it's because most folks don't know what they're looking at; they probably take it for a 4-wheeler or razer. (?!?) Lizzie gets a five mile run every morning now we're irrigating again. Turns a chore into a pleasure !

It seems like yard work took over the spring and summer so far. Yet it doesn't look much different for it. We did take the "09" out to breakfast a few times and to the grocery store today. Driving it always makes the day better and we always visit with nice folks.

Looks great to me Rich ! On yard work, I have found useing the mower with wheels down tends to do a better job.😁 I guess trimming under the hedges would work that way.

Thanks for the advice Dallas. Actually I tipped it over to give the wasps some air.
While driving today I heard a terrible noise that turned out to be a slow pounding jack-hammer. It gets your attention in a T if only for a while before you realize it isn't the engine.
I had another thought but it has escaped me now.

It's nice to be able to look out the window and see the old car. Customers walk by and take a picture or show the cranking motion. Seems like it's good to have others enjoy it besides us.
SpdstrBkfst.jpg
The cook showed it to his 6? year old son. They came in and the youngster asked how much it would cost to get one. I said "a lot but you could build one. I built that one". His eyes got even bigger but dad wasn't encouraging him. At least a seed was planted.
The smoke in the air is still heavy but we braved it for the ride while it's warm enough for the Speedster. It doesn't get many miles any more.

Some real nice dirt roads for touring around my house. I love driving around and seeing the cows playing in the fields, seeing the crops grow, etc. The T is perfect for this kind of area.

We were on a camping trip and found a great road that went along the edge of a wilderness area, except for a couple of short sections the road was in really nice shape. It was a very nice day with perfect weather and flowers everywhere, the kind of day I dream about.

We finally went to one of the weekly Cruise Nights. We took the Speedster but no camera. It's good to have an old car there among the street rods and the muscle cars. I was several cars away when the most delightful teenager rushed up to me and asked if that yellow car was my car. She could hardly stand still and had a lot of questions. GTOs had been an obsession since she was 4 years old but now that Model T Speedster was her absolute favorite. Finally she asked sheepishly "Would it be alright if I sat in it?" I told her sure but don't get any grease on you.
After while she and her mother came up and thanked me so much. I asked her if she wanted to go for a ride in it and she came unglued. "Yes, Yes, Yes!"
So with Mom's permission I started it up and she got in. We drove a couple laps around an adjacent parking lot. The guys kidded Joy, "Do you think He'll come back?"
We forget that uncontrollable excitement unless we are around it. It's contagious. I along with several car buffs couldn't have enjoyed anything more. She was smiling from ear to ear and said "This is the best day of my life."
So the magic is out there if we give it an opportunity. Some can contain themselves a bit more but I see that gleam in their eyes whether they are 16 or 90. Joy can spot it and sets up rides for those who can enjoy them. We found a young guy a couple weeks ago who never imagined a ride in my 1907 Buick but couldn't say enough about it. It makes my day when I can share the hobby with them.
One fellow last night clued Joy in that my Speedster was worth $200,000. He had been to some auctions and thought we should know. She tried to tell him it wasn't but he knew better. At any rate I was glad we had gone to the Cruise Night. The T's are a great contrast and are appreciated by many.
I wish I had pictures or video.

What a great story, thanks for sharing. Your description paints a very clear picture in my mind, guess you artists don't need paint and canvas to create a vivid image.

And may I respectfully suggest you post this in that doom and gloom thread about the end of the old car hobby. Be well, jb

I like going to the local cruises. No one is there to "WIN". My car doesn't have to be spotless, the atmosphere is layed back and more social. There is a wide range of cars and people. Rich is correct that the T attracts even the younger crowd. They will stand asking questions with their backs to an expensive muscle car. :)

While the Speedster was at the front of the line in the garage we took it to breakfast this morning. We had a nice visit with a 91 year old who was remembering Model Ts from his youth. His Uncle had a Speedster and he was enjoying mine. It was fun to talk to him.
Joy9-81.jpg
Joy managed to get a photo but not the greatest. We have a little smoke in the air from fires but not as bad as it was last year. I think we are done with the 100° days. Somehow, starting the day with a Model T ride gets us off to a good start.

Drove to a village nearby and took some pictures. The village has been designated a historic site for its collection of original Mennonite house barns that were built in the traditional style when they came to Canada in the 1870s.

Oiling the valves on the Roof overhead. One last breakfast before rain the rest of the week.
B4daRain.jpg
Some days bring more attention to the old cars than others. Maybe it's the beginning of change in the seasons. Several groups of folks at the cafe and then at the copy center stopped and examined and photographed the Speedster. I enjoy watching through the windows as they stoop to look and motion various ways to describe their knowledge of details and how it works. A couple guys told me of the cars they had and ones they would like. Ts were included. Also, there were conversations through rolled down windows at the stop lights.
I still have half a tank so maybe I'll get some Fall color driving. Nothing like driving the Ts.

Rich, you inspired me. We really haven't taken a drive just for the fun of it all summer. Lizzie is a working gal, our drives have been to set water, check lines, fix fence and haul feed. That doesn't mean they haven't been joyrides ! These two put the joy in joyride. The only thing they enjoy more than riding in Lizzie, is herding sheep.

Today was perfect for a drive just for the fun of it. Overcast, 70f, we made a ten mile circle around the neighborhood, no rain yet. I felt I owed it to the pups. Had to move Lizzie yesterday, no less enthusiastic they piled in to go a hundred feet, and didn't seem disappointed. :D

We have been on a number of trips recently and put on well over 1,000 miles most of them dirt roads. We went to the desert and forests of the Deschutes National Forest in Central Oregon, the desert and mountains of the Owhee country in far Eastern Oregon and Western Idaho and then drove the Quartzville Back Country Scenic Byway with the Model A club in the Cascade Mountains of Western Oregon. We had great trips with wonderful weather and met a bunch of really nice people everywhere we went. We had very few problems altho I did have to push a pick up with a rope back to camp on our last day at Quartzville when I blew a head gasket (the steam picture).

Took mine out for it's first photo-op in 10 years. I think my timing was a bit off on the foliage.

Getting the Christmas tree in a Model T has been tradition at our house for over 4 decades now. I'm afraid this looks much like the past few years but was taken today. We hadn't had the Coupe out for a few weeks, so it was good to start it up.

Our favorite tree place from years past no longer carries them. They had a policy of picking one out and sliding $10 under the door. Ahh, the good old days. The cold and a low tire didn't deter us.
Best wishes for the Holidays.

Rich that is just too cool! Pun intended. Car looks great and I bet it was glad to get out. It's a shame how things change but it's inevitable.
Merry Christmas! Yup...none of that PC "Happy Holiday" crap from me!!

The Rusty Coupe has earned a rest the last two Winters. Last year my heart surgery and this year Covid, -34° nights and general laziness occured. Upon getting it out for some drives, the brake handle was refusing to stay forward in high gear. I had to hold it forward with my left foot. Shifting between low and high became tricky, decelerating, releasing the hand lever and pushing and holding it forward. All the time trying to steer and keep the RPMs up so it wouldn't die on me. I did get better at it but veered a bit a couple of times.

The problem laid in the rear brake cam arm sticking in its bushing. Sitting outdoors in the Winter will cause this. The quick fix was to pound is back with a rod and hammer and spray with wd-40. When warm weather returns, I with get some oil in there. The same problem happened on a 26-27 rear brake some years ago. It, however, does have an oil cup which hadn't been oiled. It's a combination of rust and moisture I believe. The sticking subsided the first two runs after getting warmed up but this time it stayed stuck unit forced.
The second problem was steaming. The coolant level had dropped a gallon. I haven't checked the radiator often as it has not been a problem before. I'm not so good at maintenance and would rather build a new T than maintain the old ones. Age is a factor too. I will try to do better.
