I am coming after you Steve - to OCF

Post by DHort » Tue Sep 03, 2019 11:14 pm

Steve, if I head for Auburn I will miss you. I left the north side of Milwaukee this AM and got as far as the Indiana dunes. I drove around Chicago because I did not want to drive thru Gary. Unfortunately the system will not let me add photos from my phone. Passed a farm where a guy had at least a doZen old gas pumps outside including one or more with the glass tank. Got pulled over by a young officer who did not like my 1920 license plate. Said in Illinois you have to have a current plate, so I got it out from under the seat. He said there is no place to install it, so he let me go and told me to learn the law.
Hwy 45 turned into a freeway on the south side of Chicago. I used my phone to get me to the crossing of the old Dixie Hwy and Lincoln Hwy in Chicago Heights. Not the best neighborhood. Then I weaved myself northeast to the Dunes and it started to rain as I pulled in. Now the stars are out and its almost time for bed. We shall see how far I get tomorrow...

What does Illinois do about cars from states that use only one plate? :(

That young officer was wrong. In Illinois an antique car can be driven with year of manufacturer plates as long as the vehicle has valid current plates and they are in the vehicle. I have verified this several times with various Illinois State Police and IL Secretary Of State Police. Art

Are the car ferries still running from Ludington MI to Wisconsin? Might be a way to avoid Chicago/Gary?

Safe travels, Dave. You have more nerve than I do - I'd be inclined to take the fast ferry from Milwaukee to Muskegon, and then back again on the return trip.

From AAA rules of driving in another state https://drivinglaws.aaa.com/tag/registr ... residents/
Illinois' Rule
Non-residents may operate vehicles not registered in the state so long as such vehicles have at all times duly registered in, and displayed upon it, a valid registration card and registration plate or plates issued for such vehicle in the place of residence of such owner and is issued and maintains in such vehicle a valid Illinois reciprocity permit as required by the Secretary of State, and provided like privileges are afforded to residents of this state by the state of residence of such owner.

Michigan Rule
Non-residents are permitted the operation of a vehicle within this state without registering the vehicle in, or paying any fees to, this state if the vehicle at all times is duly registered in, and displays upon it a valid registration certificate and registration plate or plates issued for the vehicle in the place of residence of the owner.
The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

Got up this am and had to go play in Lake Michigan. Got to close and got my shoes wet. Drove a couple hours and tink tink tink. Muffler broke loose. Went to TractorSupply and what they had did not work. Went to Autozone and part needed to be bent. Walked over to muffler place and mechanic had to ask desk clerk for permission to bend a piece of metal 90 degrees in a vise. Wow. Did not work. Got something else from Autozone and that is OK. Need to get a hacksaw tomorrow n make a better fix. Nice drive though. Only 160 miles from Henry Ford. Should get there. Close to Sturgis MI.

Muffler trouble for me too. Somewhere in Missouri if I remember correctly. It was coming apart, but just needed the nut and lock nut tightened. A piece of luck.

Dave, be ready for a rough go on US 12. It's OK until after MI 50, where it starts to get rough. The worst is from Saline through Ypsilanti, then it get better into Detroit. That Saline/Ypsilanti stretch is what gives Michigan its reputation for bad roads.

It is very frustrating that I cannot add photos from my Droid. The software keeps telling me it cannot tell the size of the photos. I get a little yellow triangle on the attachment page. I forgot to mention that a 70 year old semiretired guy talked with me at Autozone. I ended up giving him a ride. Smile from ear to ear. Also stopped at Studebaker Museum in South Bend.

I met a nice guy driving a model T today. We solved his problem and he is underway again. Here are some photos to prove he is on the road. :D
Dave can explain what we had to do.

I had 2 blocks to go to the gas station and ran out of gas 1 block short. Good thing I am carrying spare gas. Had a great time with Dallas. He is a pretty cool guy with a really neat truck he just finished. I am sitting in an RV in the parking lot of the Henry Ford. I made it!

Just a point of order. If you had gas on board, you didn't run out of gas....

Dallas and I did more work on the muffler. It was hanging pretty low and almost touching the fuel line. We disconnected the exhaust from the engine . Dallas did all the dirty work from underneath . Now it is lifted up a little higher than it was before so it is about 1/4 inch away. I feel better.

Dave,
Are you sure you weren’t just doing that on purpose like you were filming some kind of promo?

Glad you made it ok and have fun out there. Looking forward to pictures eventually.
