When I was in the middle east in the late 1980's gas was $.09 per liter, I about crapped!

Re: Old Photo, Cheap gas
When I started driving (ya I know - last century) we had a Purple Martin station that the price was 23.5 cents/gallon. I got a 5c/gal discount as I drove a truck, and I didn’t have to pay the 5c taxes.
Today we pay .28 c/gal taxes and about 2.40/gal for the gas.

If my short term memory gets any shorter, I won’t even have thought about what I’m going to forget.

Well... the price of gas, that has not been discussed for some time, let me put in my 2c;
In the Emirates gas is still 0.20c and you don't pay any taxes on your Lamborghini,
In the Netherlands gas is 1.75€ a liter, at 1.10$ to the euro(€) and 4.2 liter to the gallon that ads up to about 8.40$ a gallon
On top of that you pay a roadtax, which for a mid-size european car (that's a small car to U.S. standards) is about 100€ quarterly !
On the upside historic cars of 40years or older are exempt from road tax, and cars between 25 and 40 years old only pay one quarter per annum, the philosofy behind that is they are not used as daily drivers and have allready paid their share...
And to nudge people into buying a nice Prius they are almost completely exempt from all taxes,
including the 45% BPM "luxury tax" on the price of a new car, you read that right 45% !!! (on top of that you pay a hefty 21% sales tax on almost everything you buy exept food and medicins)
Come to Europe, you'll love it here !!

Re: Old Photo, Cheap gas
Back in 1971 when I started driving there was a self service gas station (one of the first I think) across the street from the high school that I attended. It was called "Easy Pickn's Gas" price was .19 per gallon for regular, .21 for supreme. Oh those were the days!

Re: Old Photo, Cheap gas
Was your high school in Auburn, or elsewhere California ?
In case you have not read the papers, California has become a leftist state and
you will enjoy all sorts of social engineering and related costs that weren't there
for the working class in 1971.
What is the California state tax on a gallon of gasoline these days ?

More people are doing it today than ever before !

Brent, I grew up on the east side of the San Francisco bay. As far as gas taxes go in California I gave up long ago trying to keep up. An interesting side note here is that last week I was in southern Oregon and paid .90 per gallon less for regular at the same name brand station that I get gas in California and I didn't have to get out of my truck to pump it!
