2 wrench valve lifters

Post by Dennis_Brown » Mon Oct 21, 2019 9:44 pm

What keeps 2 wrench valve lifters from backing off. I can see that with a lock nut they are more apt to stay in adjustment.

Dennis,

"What keeps 2 wrench valve lifters from backing off?"

To answer your question: Not much.

Have had a few friends with those, and the adjustments backed off. Yes, there is a locking method, but in what I've seen, it's not as guaranteed as the lock nut. I've never seen one of the screws as pictured above. I have seen a style that uses a locking type thread form, (the trade name for it escapes right now).

Could it be "Root interference lock thread", as used on the Mopar "leaning tower of power"?

Roar,

Yes, that's what it is. Trade name is Spiralock. There's probably others too. https://www.stanleyengineeredfastening. ... /spiralock

The lifter bolt shown in the picture, the slot will close up, or one side will brake off, NO FIX.

The best are BOBs, In IL.

They are made the way they should be. The bolts, nuts, and lifter body, laugh at a file.

As always, any brand of lifter, should be butt. None are perfect.

That is why some people say adjustable lifters loosen up, because the high spots wear off, and then they are loose.

Here are some pictures.

One more thing, you do NOT need 3 Wrenches, on lifters, with a lock nut.

Correct. And, you do NOT need to cut down your tappet guides in the engine block in order to adjust your tappets.

Ok so how do you keep the lifter from turning when you snug down the lock nut without using 3 wrenches? I have yet to see lifters that when down you could hold it with a wrench, maybe the flats were just peeking over the top. No you don't have to trim the lifter bosses, even if you know the secret to the threads per inch thing you still have to go thru several cycles to set them. But just taking a little off the top clears the way for adjusting without cranking the motor over to drop, check, turn again, adjust, drop to check etc.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Ok, this is the way we do it.

1. Butt both ends.

2. The lifters are Bob's, the only good ones. Take all the bolts out, and nuts off, and either blast, or wire brush the threads. Make sure the nuts do not move the bolt when installed, that is, rotating freely, and assemble bolts.

3. Put a heavy grease on the lifter body, none on the lifter foot, and install the lifters.

4. We set the valves, with out the valve springs.

5. We use a light spring under the valve to keep it out of the way. It came in a hand lapper, one time.

6. Push the valve down, take the other hand and take a reading with the feeler gauge, and let the valve spring, out of the way.

7. Grab the top of the bolt and place the wrench on the body of the lifter, and push lightly inward, with the other hand, loosen the lock nut, and you should be able to adjust the bolt, and nut by hand, and then snug, lock nut.

8. All the pictures I can find now are of valves on a Model A, which would be the same process as a T, and B Ford.

9. I always point the cam toes downward.

With all due respect, Bob's Antique Auto Supply is located in Loves Park, IL, not in Quincy, IL.

So the lifters he sells are not the same as Snyder's ? They carry the 2 wrench lifters also.

We make the lifters right here in Loves park, we just bought some machinery to start making them in house, hopefully six weeks they will be back on the shelf, currently out of stock, Bob

Thanks, Keith.

I don't know which lifters Snyder sells, but Bob's lifters, are his own.

You don't want those anyway, you want the Bolt, Nut, and Lifter body kind.
