Safety Hub Options Preference and Opinions
Looking to buy a set of safety hubs for a large drum axle with wire wheels. Looking through the vendors offerings I've notice some differences between designs. I'm soliciting people to share their experiences and opinions, pros and cons on those that they may be familiar with.
This is the Stoltz (Model T Ranch), 2 "O" rings and a needle roller bearing (is this necessary and a good application for this type of bearing) and a wide groove to I assume allow the "stub" to move both radially and length wise? It appears from their catalog pictures that both Lang's and Snyders carry the Stoltz hub. This offering is from MAC's a single "O" ring, no needle bearing (?) and a narrower groove.
I believe this to be a McEachern hub, no needle bearing, no groove. I know there is quite a controversy between locking the hub in tight and allowing it to float.
Not aware of any others out there. Thanks

Re: Safety Hub Options Preference and Opinions
I have made my own for many years. I have always let them float. If you actually torque off/ break a axle the friction of the close fit (about.002-.004 clearances) to the tube along with the O ring will easily keep the wheel in place while you stop. Just my opinion.
Now I just might install a set screw in a installation I’m doing this winter as it will have a Bailey locking differential, so you wouldn’t immediately know if you broke a axle!!

I'm running a set of Stoltz hubs on my Roadster. No issues, work great.

I have a McEachern hub on my T. I have oil leaking out onto my brakes. What kind of seal does this have, and how do I get to it. I removed the Allen head set screw from the axle housing. I can't pull the hub out

I'm sure Dan can supply you with the correct part number on the seal. As far as not being able to get the hub out perhaps whoever installed the hubs allowed the set screws to score the hub preventing it from pulling out? Again Dan would be of more help and can be contacted through the site. Good luck, Joe

Mark- if you need help send me an e-mail. dmcgears@yahoo.com. Did you get the wheel hub loose from the axle taper? if so, the wheel should slide out. Dan
